Why chyros is so cool
« on: Tue, 14 June 2016, 06:25:17 »
  • Because he owns and understands many great, rare KBs most of us can (can? do!) only dream about.
  • Because he posts fabulous forum and video reviews of many of them—and he narrates the videos in an inimitably suave, urbane, witty style that clearly overqualifies him for such things, yet he does them for our elucidation and enjoyment.
  • Because he could, if he wanted to, be one of those guys on network TV who narrates golf tournaments in hushed yet authoritative tones, and listening to him would be just as, or more, fun than watching people whack a little white ball around the countryside (although that's always fascinating of course).
  • Because he has a cool, mysterious logo that contains a surprising amount of energy for such a small and, technically, static graphic.
  • Because, despite obviously being a highly capable adult, he likes to spend time with his kids.
  • Because he has an unfailingly kind and tolerant attitude toward KB noobs.
  • Because he can appreciate a good Wang.
  • Because he's willing to believe that someone, somewhere, genuinely likes Futaba switches.

Feel free to chime in.

Oops, sorry, I must've selected "Lock this topic" when I meant to select "Don't use smileys".

Chyros would never have done that.  :?)

The cross-sections under the high-power microscope were very cool.
Citizens United violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it’s just an oligarchy, with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nominations for president or to elect the president.
So now we’ve just seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election’s over.”

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

My only regret in life was not being able to secure a board he wanted to review.

He has a sixth sense: seeking out the right people and the right places to get a good chunk of these amazing boards for £1.

Can you even imagine?

Says the geek to the council employee: "Hello kind Sir, I am a purveyor of the most fine vintage keyboards and I would like to browse your wears".

LOL. Closer to the truth than a joke, actually.

"...and I would like to browse your wears".

Browse your wears? You mean, look inside what they were wearing? Clearly C. is willing to go to even greater lengths than we imagined to obtain rare KBs.

Hmmm... I can try having an affair with a council employee to achieve similar success!

LOL... Tonight I spotted this YouTube video about how to turn a Dell AT101 into a fast, linear gaming board. As I have a scratchy, lube-lacking AT101 stuck away somewhere, it seemed worth watching.

A friendly looking fellow with blond hair appeared, speaking to the camera in a low, relaxed voice. At first I just focused on the content, as it was so interesting. Then eventually I thought, "Why does he sound so familiar?" I glanced at his YouTube name:

Chyrosran22

Whoa, it was Chyros, in the flesh! So that's what he looked like! I'd always assumed he looked like a college professor, or a scientist. Someone in a tweed jacket and horn-rimmed glasses, or a lab coat—an authority, an academic type. But he looked like a dude, someone you'd hang out with doing stuff. It was especially fun because I'd watched and listened for a minute before I realized, "Hey, I know this guy!"

He has a cool animated opening logo, too, and I'm sure I would've spotted his name in it if the characters hadn't gone by too quickly for my rapidly aging brain to catch. Oh well.

how to turn a Dell AT101 into a fast, linear gaming board.

That video inspired me, too.

I have a couple of those laying around, too, and since I can do it without unsoldering (the last AT101W I stripped had EVERY SINGLE pin bent over! AAARRRRRRGGHH!) I think I may try it myself, even though I dislike linears. But my son loves them so it will surely go to him anyway. What is the rollover on those? Northgates have "NKRO" embossed directly on the PCB.

I need the practice because I want to do a heavy mod on an Omnikey 101 that I have coming in the mail (probably orange or partial-click-modded orange this time - if I can put those parts from an AEK1 into the complicated white switch bodies I will be sailing!), and my experience is that desoldering those switches is extremely finicky and difficult - for some reason the pads come up at the blink of an eye.

Glad you guys liked the video :) . The AT101 has 2KRO. Desoldering Alps is pretty easy UNLESS you have to bend the pins. Which makes desoldering an AT101, like you mentioned, a living nightmare xD . I stopped salvaging switches off AT101s at some point, I just took off the top housing and took parts from there :p .

Very few, if any, such Dells down here.  Unfortunately.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Great video.. buh....... the labor involved,  mmmm....... you may as well just buy a linear qfr or corsair for $60..

This will take at least 3-4 hours to do carefully. at the difference of $20...

Tactility profile between cherry alp topre are different enough to warrant a divergence in "preference"..

But if it's Linear... not so much really, they all go straight up and down, and I think they're all 4mm as well.

Oh boy, you really need to try a few more different types of linear switches :p . The differences are huge! Which ones have you tried so far? :)

Wouldn't be Alps then.

Whatever he has in his Ergo Dox.

Wouldn't be Alps then.

mmmm.... I've tried um all... they're all pretty much the same...

The only difference being friction and resistance profile, but those attributes arn't well perceived when you're typing at speed..

You 'd only feel it if you're TRYING to feel for it by pressing the switch slowly..  WHICH imho is not a valid use-case test..

No seriously, which ones have you tried? If you've tried Honeywell and Tesla Hall effect, Fujitsu leaf spring and magnetic reed, Alps SKCC and SKCL, linear space invaders, Futabas, etc. you'll find they feel very different overall ;) . Even the different types of Cherries feel almost incomparable, like M5, M8, MX, MY.... I'd love to try a whole M5 board sometime (I only have a loose switch).

Sure, there's more difference between tactile and especially linear switches, of course, but that's not to say linear switches don't have a whole character of their own :) .
