Directional speakers
« on: Sat, 29 April 2017, 09:34:45 »
Who knows anything, apart from the standard geekspeak (and dubious indiegogo pitches) available in a google search?

I'm really looking for people with no involvement to talk about what they think. Hoping for more objective viewpoints. I don't have the money to buy now, but damn I want directional speakers so bad.

TBH I'm very suspicious about crowdfunding for something like this. If the technology is real and if it is replicable at a tolerable cost, I'm pretty sure there would have been plenty of big and powerful investors happy to fund the development. I'm pretty sure Apple Computer itself would get into the game, pay for the tech, and create Macbook speakers that only the user can hear. Right now what I can see are endless delays on a certain crowdfunding site. (Not going to post links, because I'm suspicious and don't want to give them more clicks.)

Irrelevant what I want to use the speakers for.

In any case I would never watch porn in public places. You really think it's fun to watch when you're waiting for a train?

No but seriously. What WOULD be a use case for those kind of speakers? I don't get it.

Do you really live in the Netherlands, Europe's most crowded country?

Or are you actually a Greenlander or Falklands Islander?

If I have to explain to you a use case for directional speakers, you don't live in a small house, you don't have family members who are interested in different things, you never went to college and shared dorms, you don't work in an open workplace, and you don't regularly take public transportation and want a bit of entertainment while commuting. I would be inclined to call you a caveman, but even a caveman needs directional speakers to hear music or else the entire cave would be echoing nonstop. Alternatively you could be Amish, but I don't think they allow computers.

Dude chillax, don't have to go so offensive. I genuinely am wondering why one would want directional speakers. That's all. Have a nice day, sir.

a directional speaker would not have a narrow enough broadcast cone such that it'd make a difference in a --small house--

I have seen laser sound projection, but obviously you couldn't afford something such as that..

So... that is to say no.. there's no such thing as directional speakers for your use case.

Unless headphones count as directional speakers.

Wasn't there this experiment that sound would rise from the ground up to above, basically forming a cocon of sound around somebody? I thought they tested it in aviation or something. That would be really slick.

If you could have very local sound without needing headphones, that would be a breakthrough because perhaps than you can listen music isolated without damaging your ears after prolonged use.

depending on the distance to the ceiling such a setup would just turn into a regular speaker..

The issue with all these projects is that while it may be effective for high frequency, the lows will bounce regardless of the initial cone of sound produced.

So you can't have it two ways? Either you end up with a very tinny sound because you need to avoid producing low frequencies. Or either you end up with the sound spreading anyway "coz dat bass brah".
