Repair Filco Majestouch myself or send to RMA
« on: Fri, 19 May 2017, 22:21:35 »
Hello Guys,

I bought a Filco Majestouch 2 from MechanicalKeyboards and in less than 2 months it has died. Does not connect to windows, mac, nothing. I have 2 options, either try to open this up and fix myself or wait over a month and send to RMA to Mechanical Keyboards.

Has anyone had such experience with Filco's just dying in such a short time or fixing them? I was wondering if there was some sort of common cause or just deal with it and ship it off to RMA and buy some other keyboard in the meantime.

I always choose to majestouch myself when given the option.

That is good for you, but unless you have actual advice I'd suggest for you go outside and meet people.

I don't have experience with the Majestouch, but I had to RMA a different keyboard for a defective switch to MechanicalKeyboards.com. From the time it arrived on their doorstep (according to USPS) to the time I got it back, six and a half weeks passed just for a switch swap.

If possible, I would see if they will either ship you a new keyboard when they receive your broken one or give you some troubleshooting steps and ship the necessary replacement parts to you if necessary. In my case, it would have been nice just to have received a new switch and to have soldered it in myself.
Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

The world has become a weird place.

Explain the issue via email and inquire about an exchange. A similar issue happened with a colleague of mine and they were able to complete an exchange.

That is very unfortunate as those boards aren't known to just fail like that. However there is always a first time. This is one of those cases where we can't just answer, "get a better board!" because Filcos are good boards. In situations like these, I would recommend just trying to fix it yourself.

Well if it's still under warranty ,  send it in,   because at this point, we have NO IDEA what the problem is..  it could be something you can fix, it might not be..

What tp said.  No reason to attempt a fix, violate the warranty, only to find out its beyond repair.  Send it back and get a working keyboard, this is why warranty's exist.

Is warranty free or do you need to cover shipping expenses?

He'll have to cover shipping expense to MK.com, but MK.com will pay for shipping back. For me it was $12 or 15, I think. I figured it wasn't too bad since I got free shipping when I ordered it in the first place, and it was tax free.

If it's under warranty, by all means get it fixed by them rather than yourself. But if it's no longer under warranty, you got nothing to lose to attempt to fix an already broken board.

the tools to fix it probably cost more than the shipping if it's under warranty,

unless we're buying $5 soldering irons and $5 soldering pumps and $1 solder tube..

Thank you all for your input.

It has only been 2 months(well taken care of) so under warranty. I have the tools to open it up and I have a modified Pulse cable I bought for it(I have not installed it) so only if the original cable had an issue could I fix it but I fear it could void warranty. Therefore I am packing it up tonight and shipping it off , probably won't see it for 2 months-ish :( . MK support isn't being the best to me for now, will try to contact them on Monday again.

Luckily another GH'er (Pemdas) gave me a good deal on a keyboard I really wanted so I will have another nice keyboard soon :) .

Pemdas is a good guy. He helped me out with my GB. You're in great hands!
