someone tell me to pull the trigger
« on: Sat, 30 September 2017, 08:55:48 »
I've been eyeing a realforce 104ug hi-pro. Really want to try the hi-pro caps, and could use a full size (normally use fc660c with seperate numpad)

Someone tell me to pull the trigger on this one. Or tell me to buy something else. I just need a little motivation to spend that kind of money

No, don't do it...

Save up for a new graphics card that's actually useful..

I've seen many o'peeps  who have nice keyboards,  and ****ty computers..

What good is that shiny keyboard when your computer is crap... ??

Priorities...

A graphics card is so much more useful than keyboard bling..

It's like those Custom cars which are pointlessly slow,  but have expensive paintjobs..

At least you can get laid with a nice looking slow car..

A slow computer,  you might as well kill yourself...

Not familiar with that keyboard, had to look it up.  Plastic case.  No homing bumps.  Not programmable.  No split spacebar.  Lame.

And what's wrong with a separate numpad anyhow?

Some people just want a regular keyboard that works.

But to OP personally for me I couldn't get used to the high profile caps on the hi-pro.

I guess I should have put a  :p on that comment so it wouldn't be taken too seriously.  I wondered if it's even a good idea to go looking for validation on a forum where opinions and preferences vary wildly.  But that's what makes it fun!

well you could save some money if you wait.
there was a few people making some custom resin hipro caps somewhere.
but i don't actively watch those people so who knows if those will come to fruition.

OP: You didn't mention if you already had a Topre board, and just wanted one with the high caps too.

If all you want is a Topre board, I highly recommend the Type Heaven. Here's a new one for just $132 shipped. It's a real, full-size Topre---and while some peeps here have cited the differences between it and Realforces that cost nearly twice as much, I have one of each, and love them equally well. (Did I mention that the TH is, like, half as much?)

If you have a Topre and are now after the big caps, you'll like them if you you like older vintage keebs like Model M's, with similar high caps. Otherwise, from what I've read here, it's very subjective whether the Hi-Pro is worth so much extra dough. Personally, I wouldn't expect to type faster or more comfortably on spherical keys than on the modern cylindrical type. I'm perceiving that it's mostly a nostalgia/novelty thing.

Of course the best way would be for you to try one first. If I were in your place, I'd order one from someone who'd let you return it if you didn't like it. Then the most you'd be out would be shipping and perhaps a small restocking fee.

idea23 (/u/busgamer) and blizzard mods (/u/ayybasketballs) are both working on resin topre hi-pro caps:
https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/6zji52/ic_idea23_topre_hipro_sets/
https://www.reddit.com/r/mechmarket/comments/6xbffs/artisan_ic_blizzard_mods_resin_hipro_hhkb_keysets/

Which I'm eagerly waiting for, since I want blanks. But if you're ok with legends on the RF 104 UG, I would just pull the trigger. If you end up not liking it, it'll be really easy to make most of your money back on /r/mechmarket.

Personally I would recommend against the Type Heaven. I haven't tried it myself, but most reviews suggest that it's not as good as an RF/HHKB/FC. Even if you like it, you'll never know if it's really as good as it could be until you get a real topre board and compare anyway. Like I said in the previous comment, if you just get the RF, you can always re-sell for minimal loss.

Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. When America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces.

That's an incorrect analogy.

They didn't take the horse, because they couldn't eat it all before it rotted away.

The saddle was the only non-perishable item of the horse-experience-category they could retain/recover.

All tools are disposable if they are low cost enough to be replaced.

What keyboard has turned into for many younger geekhackers is a collection of pebbles..

Back when humans were still tiny marsupials living in hovels,  it might've made sense to collect such pebbles to attract a mate..

However, the energy and productivity loss of keyboard collecting is wholly against the modern acts of life.

The very best we can make of this situation is to re-prioritize the utility to cost ratio of our computing experience.

You can cut up the experience categories to make your point.

But that does not change the fact that utility prioritization is out of order.

Wait until someone posts it on classifieds for a greatly reduced price.
If you already have a 660c, then the hi pro doesn't have that much else to offer such that you would need it right away.
It's not like the hi pro is going anywhere any time soon. You can buy it any time you want so long as you have the funds.

I've already decked out the computer as far as I want to go. Spent $1,400 about 6 months ago and built one. Thanks for the advice though. A slow computer definitely is the worst thing on this earth.

I'm so impatient though. I actually resolved to buy the thing, then got cold feet at checkout again. I realized it may be too close to the 660c in switch style and I'm not even sure I'd like the profile, i just see shiny new things and want them immediately. Usually my stinginess with money helps me avoid catastrophe as it seems to have done in this case. I also didn't know how to get alerted to post responses so I'm just now reading through everything and even happier that I waited. Now I'm looking for a white Realforce 104u-s instead. How fickle my desires are.

I wish I would have seen these replies so I could have actively participated in my own post... Still learning the forum, I'm used to reddit, but over here people seem to be more in tune with my attitude... anyways I do have a topre board. a fc660c that I absolutely love. I wanted to try the hipro caps but I think I'll wait. The order and return thing is a good idea though, I contemplated it but decided I don't want to be bothered with all of that and will wait for some hipro caps to show themselves at a cheaper price.

lul now I'm just thinking about  how he spent 1000$ on a graphics card and spent 400$ on other parts which in the end will again give you a crappy computer.
