Is RGB an unpopular opinion among keyboard enthusiast?
« on: Sat, 07 December 2019, 16:20:16 »
Hiya!
I'm definitely a newborn in the mechanical key hobby.
I recently pieced together my own keyboard.
By pieced together, i still shy away from soldering and got a premade rgb hot-swappable switch pcb with case from kdbfans (i realize among the more experienced hobbiest that kdbfans causes heightened nausea and disgust).

While shopping around for keycaps, I kept getting the feeling that the variety of backlit keys was an even more limited option.
And that reddit threads and instagrams looked like they were filled with pictures of non-backlit keycaps. (I still assume i likely didn't look in the right places)

Is this merely because the market for non-rgb keycaps is larger? or is backlit keycaps unpopular... or something else?

some people like rim spinners, some think they're too gaudy.

You do you.

Most runs of keycaps for enthusiasts have been made by GMK, EnjoyPBT and by Signature Plastics in DSA and SA profiles. These manufacturers have offered many options for colours and custom legends — which is why there have been so many different variations of them. None of those have offered support for backlighting, however.

You will find many keycaps for backlighting on e.g. eBay. But those are often in thin-walled double-shot ABS or even in laser-ablated paint on ABS, which are of less quality than GMK, EPBT and SA. And support for other layouts than 100% and its subsets are rare.

Like TP4 said, you do you however rgb is usually a "we don't do that here" when having a sleek and professional keyboard

Thanks for all the responses.
I thought I just wasn't looking in the right places when I thought i noticed the lack of backlight option support amongst the keycap elites/professionals.

I'm starting to wonder if even professionals would likeee the extended option to extend their keycap profiles to support backlit.  Thus adding an even more niche group to the community.  Or otherwise always be considered not sleek/not professional.

This is in the area of Fashion.  Fashion is about identity, and it responds to the ever changing world. Beige used to be the defacto professional look, then it went to Black and Silver, now it's mostly just black.

It's inevitable that some new color scheme will permeate in the future.

If you truly want to be aesthetically refined and -Not- an artistic follower (mere shopper),  I recommend taking an art history class somewhere. If you want to go about it on a dime,  just search for the course syllabus for the class from prestigious schools, and read their select text books.

In olden times, i remember women in the family were sent to finishing schools where there was a long stint of flower-arranging. The goal wasn't so they could arrange flowers in the future,  the goal was to have them develop a sense of visual balance and conduct.

From what i have seen in custom boards the RGB is more often under glow and side glow than under the caps.

I wear uniforms in school for over 10 years, so i don't know what fashion is. I wear just a plain Tshirt and pants, works for me.

If you don't have backlit keycaps then it looks UGLY. I changed my caps to non backlit and it looks very weird whenever i turn on the RGB.
I just turn it off.
