Question about stabilizers
« on: Thu, 17 January 2013, 12:30:32 »
Hello!

I did some searching in the forum, but I didn't find this question answered yet.

I just purchased a Ducky Shine II (Brown switches, white LEDs) and find that I really dislike the mushiness of the Cherry-stabilized keys (backspace, enter, shifts, etc) and I was wondering:
Is it possible to remove the Cherry stabilizers and replace them with Costar stabilizers?

I did notice that WASD sells Costar stabilizers on their website, but before I give this a try I was hoping to get some expert advice first. :)
I do realise that due to the LED placement on the spacebar, that switching the stabilizer on it will probably not work.

Am I completely out to lunch?

(As a side note, other than the issue above, I'm really loving the Ducky Shine II!)

sigh... ok if you REALLY REALLY REALLLLLY want Costar....  You can swap in stabilizers  VIA GLUE

It'll be a combination superglue, and Gorilla glue for side support..

and you MAY have to cut holes in the plate...

all in all, NOT worth it... but NOT impossible.

It's technically possible.  It requires modification of the plate with high precision, so it's not likely you'll do it.  On the other hand if you really love your Ducky you could design (or have designed) and cut a new plate for it.  This has been done for Filco TKLs and other boards.

The plate height shouldn't be a problem, and precision wise, it's not such an issue because you can cut pieces of paper and glue them to adjust the height of the stabilizer fixations.

Now the problem is how to cut good holes in the original plate.. while everything's attached.. that is hard and dangerous.

Yikes! I'm glad I asked. I'll definitely not be switching out the stabilizers any time soon.

Thanks so much for the helpful and quick replies!

yep, I had a similar question a long time ago when I bought my Ducky.

I eventually sold it, really didn't like the cherry stabilizers, and didn't see a reason to keep a keyboard that I'm not gonna use.

It's at bottom-out where it's most dissimilar with those wanky Cherry shock absorbers.

It sounds like the clipping method will be a bit easier.  Even though it's still a bit complicated but LESS complicated than switching the entire plate I guess.

Yeah, I have been reading about the clipping method. Certainly looks easier than messing around with glue and cutting the plate, etc.

I haven't been able to find any info on how to get the stabilizer back into place in the keyboard after clipping it though. Do you know of any resources that could provide that info? Specifically, it appears that it would be difficult because the stabilizer bar is beneath the plate.

Thanks!

The correct method to remove a Cherry stabilizer is to de-solder the stabilized switch and remove it.  Then remove the plate mounted Cherry stab from the board entirely.  Production boards in my experience are all plate mounted (if there is a plate).  It's the Korean boards that use PCB mount on a plated board which makes it a whole other story.
