Matias Quiet Pro after 3 months
« on: Sat, 09 February 2013, 17:42:36 »
I still love everything about the keyboard.

One tiny little thing: The Spacebar, nipple keys (F-J) and frequently used keys are turning shiny much quicker than expected.

Hopefully the demand for alps key caps will rise so we can get a group buy going for double shot or dye sub. So far every attempt has failed due to lack of demand.

I don't know what Matias is waiting for but they will eventually release PBT caps. Not holding my breath on this.

I'm in for any group buy caps for the Matias.

That's encouraging and it seems to be your favorite.

I ordered my mini MQP! Can't wait to tell you guys how I like it.

I ordered mine too, hopefully I'll get it soon  :D

Oh and uh I actually just wish they'll even release a keycap set that you can buy.  In my opinion the Quiet Pro will look better with white keycaps, so I wish I can just purchase a set and swap it over.

Mine will be black (PC though I use Macs a lot). I'd prefer the silver case -- which gives off a great TRS-80 Model I vibe -- but the color is not worth the $40 extra bucks and loss of USB hub.

White keys on a black body wouldn't do it for me. I'm more partial to two-tone and beige schemes, but the black will do for now. Down the road I may opt for a color modifier set. Matias should definitely do the next iteration with a backlight.

White on silver would be cool, but I'd stick with Matias as a source for that. There are many shades of white plastic that would look awful.

It certainly ranks with my top 4.
In no specific order - Buckling Spring - Matias ALPS - NMB "Space Invader" - Topre

The Green MX has potential but it will need more consistency in the way it sounds  and feels.

abs, this is normal yea?

I think that he means that certain keys are getting shinier faster than others, and not just out of more use.  I have experienced it on my F and J key on my Das Keyboard.  Really though, they also look darker over all.  I'm guessing his keys are wearing similarly.

Sorry for not making it clear -
1 Shinier faster than other because more use - Which is normal.
2 Shinier faster than ABS keycaps on other keyboards I own with similar use. ie Filco

My Quiet Pro arrived but they ship me the Mac version instead of PC version.  I've talked to them and they have no problem getting it exchanged  :D

Though now I'm having second thought on Quiet Pro vs Tactile Pro.

Anyone else tried the Quiet Pro out there?  It seems to me that everyone really enjoyed the experience.  But to me the initial impression felt a bit like using o-rings.  In a way it's kind of mushier and kills the mechanical feel.

However Tactile Pro feels very awesome and it's almost like a crunchier more tactile and louder cherry mx blue.  But it only comes with Mac layout.  So now I have 2 choices:

1.  Exchange it for the PC Quiet Pro and hopefully the feeling will "grow on me"?  I've only get to use it briefly that day anyone else know if it will "grow on me"?

2.  Exchange it for the Tactile Pro since I liked the finish (white) and feel of the key switches.  I'll probably just use AutoHotKey to reprogram it for windows or something.

What do you guys think?

EDIT:  For those that are wondering.  Clicky ALPS feel like between cherry mx blue and buckling spring.

I love my Tactile Pro.

Really interested in trying the QP out, but I hate the feel of o-rings. Will have to think on this.

The feeling will "grow" on you IMHO.  The part that you're missing is mostly the sound.  The feel is slightly dampened, but if you look at my review pictures... there is barely any dampening material.  To compare it to an o-ring is excessive :p

The dampening material is shooooped to make it more apparent.

You may just be missing the sound of the tactile.  People really love the sound :p

lol probably, since I actually compare it side by side with the Tactile Pro so you immediately notice that Tactile Pro is more tactile and crunchier.  And Quiet Pro first impression is kinda like mehhhh feel like rubber dome / o-ring.

That and the white laser etched keycaps just look so much better than the black laser engraved/infilled keycaps.  Though I literally only play with it for 5 min so maybe my opinion will change over time.

Mmmmmm I guess I have until Friday to decide, any more input would be appreciated  :D

EDIT:  Would you say it's kinda like Topre where you start off with meh then end with woah?  Though I haven't tried Topre either so probably doesn't help LOL.

lol damn it it's so hard.  I have to decide before tomorrow (Friday).  That's when I'll go in to get it exchanged.

What I like about Tactile Pro:
- White laser etched keycaps
- Switch feel crisp

What I don't like about Tactile Pro:
- Mac layout, PC version will come out later (unknown ETA)
- Loud

What I like about Quiet Pro:
- PC layout
- Quiet

What I don't like about Quiet Pro:
- Black keycap with white infill, you can feel the infill on your finger tips.
- Feel a bit mushy
- I could potentially "grow" to like it but it's unknown at the moment.

Feels pretty even so far nooooooooooooo.  Someone decide for me  :P

Just based on what you are writing - go with the Tactile Pro. Once you have started getting annoyed by something (mushy feel in your case) it will keep bugging you more and more. You can always sell the Mac version for a small loss when the the PC version comes out.

That's what I thought initially.  But I've decided to have faith in what you guys said about it growing on me so I'm gonna give it another shot  :)

Get both, exchange keycaps, profit!

LOL I wish I have that kind of money and I end up getting the Quiet Pro.

The main reason is because my g/f is already getting the Tactile Pro (She uses a Mac and she want white everything) and I figure if I get a Quiet Pro then I'll get to try both switches and write a comparison review later.

Second reason being that I actually haven't read a negative review about Quiet Pro yet, so I have faith that it will "grow on me" as you guys have stated.  And I must say, my 2nd time around touching this keyboard and it feels better already.  I don't know if I'm crazy or cuz I'm typing properly on my desk or it's psychological (Since I'm spending $150 on it) but either way I do admit it feels a lot clickier than my first impression.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions and I'll probably come back to write a review when my g/f gets her Tactile Pro  :D

EDIT:  So far everything feels great except the only real drawback is that I wish the LED weren't green.  Green feels so old school I wish it was blue or white.  At least it's such a minor thing lol.
