choose the first mechanical for mmorpg
« on: Sun, 03 November 2013, 05:07:29 »
Hi guys,
I'm about to buy my first mechanical keyboard ... I've always had only membrane keyboards,
The important thing is that it is compact enough not too big .. like a corsair K95 does not go well, the usage is 100% MMORPG gaming,
I have no idea what type of swtich should I choose (black? / red? / brown?) ....ah...and...(What are the most silent?")
certainly not the blue, I hate the effect click..
I have in mind these models:

NOPPOO CHOC MINI 84
CM Storm QuickFire (TK or PRO ULTIMATE )
SteelSeries 6Gv2

thanks very much for the answer

you limited yourself with those propositions (and implication about ONLY MMORPG). steelseries does not have any literally any special features for mmorpg, although it's a decent keyboard. Same with CM storm, there are keybaords on market with macro keys since you're clearly looking for those?

more important is layout?
what kind of switch you are looking for? (based on ur propositions it's cherry mx but which one?)
does the backlight is required?

the most important is good feeling with Keys and secondly, a layout is not too large...
backlight and macro keys I'm not interested.
but the big problem is the choice of cherry MX, I have always been accustomed to a membrane keyboard.

The CM QFR beats the Steelseries you mentioned in every aspect, and it's cheaper on Amazon.

http://www.amazon.com/CM-Storm-QuickFire-Rapid-Mechanical/dp/B0068INSUM

The only reason I'd see someone going for the Steelseries is the the numpad, which isn't really all that helpful in MMORPG's.
As for what switch type you want, it's completely personal preference. I, for one, actually enjoy the click from the Blue's. Try Browns- these tend to be quite popular. Or get a sampler kit from WASD keyboards to try them all

Everytime I click on that amazon link to the CMQFR I am amazed... The changes they've made after community feedback are astounding. Now, the only thing they need to change is the font and they'd have a killer keyboard.

because I'm very torn between the various cherry mx I would not want the black and reds were too heavy and too light .. since I press an arrow key repeatedly very quickly I think I will go with the brown for my first mechanical keyboard.

I used to play Maplestory a lot and one thing about the TK is that the '0' on the numpad doesn't work when you're activating the number keys, which might manifest itself in different keyboards also. For your needs I would recommend a brown if you don't like red/black, but keep in mind it's got the same force required as a red, just with the bump. A QFR is a good idea, it's cheap, well-built, and has the standard tenkeyless layout. Because you wanted something small, the Rapid would be a good choice as well as the Choc; if you'd rather have an even more compact layout than TKL, the Noppoo still has nav keys and is overall a great board. Still, Rapid is pretty much the go-to introductory keyboard.

Noppoo Choc Mini is a great keyboard for MMORPGs if you do not need backlight, it was the reason I got mine.
Ducky Mini w/ white LEDs [Browns]

WTB SLUSHY RED CC/BROBOT!!

If I were you, I would choose Noppoo Choc Mini or CM Quickfire Rapid, with brown switches. They are both compact, and brown is a safe bet for a newbie like you.
Keyboard: Filco MJ1 104 brown, Filco MJ2 87 brown, Compaq MX11800, Noppoo Choc Brown/Blue/Red, IBM Model M 1996, CMStorm Quickfire Rapid Black
Layout: Colemak experience, speed of 67wpm

Get RED.....

Black is fine but there might be more chatting in an mmorpg.. and typing on blacks could wear out your fingers.

MMO player here as well.

I heavily key-bind everything possible so my advice would be to chose a key-layout that supports easy access to keys and combos you regularly use; 75% layouts are pretty awesome for this with many having the F-row right above the alpha keys instead of spaced out, I've recently found 1.75-1-1.75 left-side  modifier layout on the bottom row makes using modifier combination with alt and keys further to the right (5/6/t/y/g/h) a bit easier without contorting your hand uncomfortably.

With those thoughts in mind, the older Noppoo Choc Minis are close to perfect for me with their layout; the only reason I don't personally like them is the controller issues it can run into outside of Windows.
