My Next Keyboard. Advice?
« on: Tue, 18 June 2013, 11:11:45 »
Good day Geeks. So I need a new keyboard for at home use. I used to use a WASD keyboard with MX Blues until I got a RF 87U 45g. I've fallen in love with it and now find myself bringing it back and forth from home to work which is getting inconvenient, but I cannot part with it. (I love the feel of Topres over Cherry switches).

I was considering getting one of the following:

1. Black 55g RealForce 87U. (If they made a 104 key version with 55g uniform, I'd get that instead  :( )
2. Leopold FC660C
3. Black Happy Hacking Professional 2 with printed keys

So basically, my only requirement is for it to have Topre switches. If you guys have any other suggestions, then please share them!

Also, I've read a couple posts on this forum that RF 55g uniform isn't as heavy as it sounds and is more tactile than tiresome. Is this true? I'd really like to have that if so. My 45g is already really nice and "thocky" but then again, I don't really have anything to compare it to. I've also heard that the HHKB2 has by far the best Topre typing experience which is definitely a plus, but then again I'd have to get used to the caps lock and ctrl swap :/ And if the FC660C is any better, then I'll wait for it to get back in stock, but money is not an issue in this situation. Any advice or past experiences would be greatly appreciated!

That's pretty much it for Topre switches.

If you like the standard layout, go RealForce.

If you like really minimalistic, go HHKB.

Leopold is sorta inbetween - closer to HHKB than RealForce.

If you're quick, you can grab the last of 3 FC660C from qtan (and stop me agonising over whether to get another keyboard I can't afford).
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Do you have a link for it? I tried searching for it, but saw he only had Cherry switches.... Maybe I searched and found the wrong thing.

here ya go

Eh. More expensive than what EK is selling for. If anything, I'll get the 55g RF, then when it comes back in stock on EK, I'll consider it if my keyboard hunger is still not satisfied. Thanks btw ray4jc

Would totally do this but I'm definitely hanging out for the rumoured white + non-printed key caps!
Where do you get the idea that an LZ-GH is basically a filco??

Maybe one day I'll evolve to that split keyboard layout you have fallen so hard for tp. I don't know. Maybe it's all just a matter of time before everyone does the same. Kinda like how I am right now with current keyboards.  ;)

Folio, the ergodox is not a contingent plan... It's honestly everything i've always wanted in a keyboard..

Functionally, there is nothing left to improve on the ergodox.  it's got everything...

At first I was frightened when I started using it, because very quickly i realized i would never buy anything else, as I've been trained to BUY keyboards by the many Great people on this forum..

Soon however, I was relieved to know that this is how I would roll for the rest of my life..

Oops, I misread the title.

I love the FC660C, it feels unique.
