Ergodox Round 2...
« on: Wed, 03 April 2013, 17:14:08 »
Just thought I should post something here for those who don't frequent the "great finds"  many /noobs for example

Since, many people missed it the first round.

Mods, if you feel this is unnecessary, go ahead and lock, but I'd consider it promotion of a gh creation. because the other subforums especially great-finds doesn't seem to have much traffic

If you guys are "on the fence"...

Probably consider getting in this round...

Given the rate of purchases on MD so far... I wouldn't think the third round would come around all that soon.

If I would be on the fence for buying it, I would wait a bit to see if someone is going to do a group order of an improved keyboard where the bugs have been worked out.

Personally, I am on the fence of selling the parts that I have bought.

Bugs? I've been using mine 12 hours a day for the last 5 days and i haven't noticed any bugs. If you are referring to disagreeing with the layout i wouldn't call that a bug, it just means you didn't agree with with how the ErgoDox team designed the layout. There wont be any changes unless someone takes the gerber files and starts a new group buy but good luck with that; it aint going to happen. This will probably be the last chance to get a ErgoDox for a long time, interest isn't what it was in round 1

Yeah, I agree with Glod. A layout change isn't really by definition a "bug". I've only been using mine for a day or two and honestly I don't have many complaints. I feel that it is something that does have a learning curve to it but once you get it down, it's not a big deal.

Like tp4issue and Glod has said, this will probably be the last chance, for a while, to pick one of these up. The thing I'm not too thrilled about is the unavailability of the aluminum case, which is understandable, due to the unforeseen manufacturing costs of the first round.

I would probably hop on if they at least offered the top and bottom plates as aluminum, because it really does make the case design all that more awesome. (Thanks again Glod for the idea!). For now I'm still undecided whether or not to get an additional one, but there is some time left.

I'm not so keen on the "aluminum" ...  the aluminum in the ergodox buy are plates.. not 1 piece.  The edges are very rough and unfinished.

IDK, if I had a stationary belt sander, I guess I'd be ok with the aluminum, LOL, but then all the work involved... :D

This is to say, I'd rather pay $500 for a 1 piece cnc case, than having the ghetto plate version.. well i guess 2 piece.

Yeah that is true, but I can tell you I hate acrylic even more, just due to the fact that it is almost impossible to keep clean. And that just constantly bothers me, especially since you are constantly touching it with your hands.

Also, aluminum is a soft metal so you can just use a hand Dremel to round the edges. You just have to be careful and use a low speed setting and take only so much at a time.

Honestly, I haven't had any trouble with the edges being sharp on mine then again I don't have the full hand case so I don't rest my wrists or arms anywhere near the edges.

As cool as it looks how i set up up the aluminium top and bottom and acrylic center it was a complete waste, the layers are rough, has stains on it, has to be dremeled to fit the pcb on the 2nd layer, and its just all around lower quality compared to the acrylic. i'm actually going to replace the top and bottom back with acrylic so that it is lighter for travel.

I hope someone comes around and makes a new case for the ergodox, maybe cnc, i dont know. Maybe i should stop being so  damn lazy and do it myself. even as a limited run of lets say a dozen cases i am sure people would buy them, with over 300 ergodox sold there is bound to be people like me that dont like the case. no offense to litster though, he still has made amazing things.

so i am ashamed of myself for how much money i have thrown at stuff the last year and i need to work on selling some stuff soon, but that being said i may drop the $155 for a third one of these without the switches and put the kit in a safe of some sort just in case something happens to the 2 i have (stolen, broken, fire, etc), this thing is that much of a game changer for me and although i cant say this with complete certainty, it is absolutely possible this could be the last chance to buy the ergodox as a complete kit.

as for case options, if you people are willing to pay for it, there's always the case used by Dox himself. Assembles in a totally different way than the layer type cases. Here's a link.

http://www.shapeways.com/shops/Dox

@Findecanor -  It's no bug, and while there's always room for improving, there's nothing seriously wrong with the ergodox as it is. been using it for over a week and loving mine.

There's always the work done by Nesiax on the key64, an altered version by bearcat, and of course whatever projects Jesse Vincent is working on at the moment. Calling the design flawed because of personal preferences wouldn't get it fixed unless the majority of the users think so too. No offence meant, but you're better off trying to design a modified version of it for your personal use.

For what it's worth, I think the ergodox ain't perfect either. But I don't have the time or the technical expertise to even begin making my own version, so I learn to live with it. Though phrasing it like that is unfair. It works better than any of the qwerty keyboards I have.

I have another set of pcb's and need a case.

If anyone is interested in fixing the travesty that is a keycap set without home-row indicators, check out this group buy:

http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=42617.0

These keys are made to go with the set of DSA keys that you can add with the ErgoDox on Massdrop.
