I present to you, the mobile Desktop.
« on: Wed, 29 May 2013, 06:02:06 »

Or the mobileDesktop or mDesktop or find one.

It's basically a notebook without a touchpad and a keyboard with a perhaps shorter but thicker front so one can also put an external keyboard closer to it. [without the crippled technology of tablets]

Yeah.. I don't believe there's a point in not connecting a mouse and a keyboard to a laptop. And actually using a laptop on the road is quite a niche for the majority of people. Most of the time it's not used as a laptop but as a mobile desktop. [and the weight of a keyboard and mouse is negligible and they fit in a carrying bag easily]

Yes a tablet, but yes you can install traditional desktop applications on it as it is, for all intents and purposes, a Windows 8-based computer with a touch screen but no mouse or keyboard attached.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

The thing about laptops as "mobile desktops" is convenience. You don't have to worry about five different cables. You just unfold it, do your thing, fold it back up and go.

Technologically laptops aren't as crippled per price as other smaller or thinner devices hence I wouldn't consider a tablet a replacement.

I have in mind that regular people often carry a laptop comfortably in a bag and then use it as a ..mobile desktop.

Since one may carry a keyboard and a mouse in a carrying bag then why not just buy a 'mobile desktop'?

My case is that a lot of people, myself included don't actually use them as laptops but as devices to set up elsewhere in a minute.

Besides, setting up a mouse and a keyboard elsewhere is literally 10 seconds.

Just get a 'convertible' style tablet and fold back the keyboard... then use bluetooth for both the keyboard and mouse.

I think the most power you can get for a convertible is something like the Thinkpad X230t with a full voltage, dual core i5. But the graphics are strictly Intel integrated.

If I had to choose between having a keyboard built in and always having to carry one around with me, I would choose built in, even if I never used it. What if I literally had to do something that takes 7.38 seconds? Why would I spend more time to plug in my keyboard and mouse to do that than to just unfold a laptop or press the power button on a tablet?

Most tasks your need a computer for you can achieve on an array of mobile phones, with various levels of success. These 'mobile' computers are carried by most people in developed nations and fit inside a pocket.
If your working and require software (or connections) that demand a laptop type device, you'd use a laptop that has a keyboard/mouse built in, so like esoom said you can fold and unfold to use/put away without any real setup time.

It's hard to define a mobile desktop, because the only difference between a desktop and a "laptop" really is that a desktop uses ALOT more power....

Otherwise, they're pretty much the same parts..

So, a mobile desktop could just be a laptop that uses a butt load of power, with a HUGE battery, and better cooling.

The thing is that this is in reference not to common mobile devices but to tons of people that actually do need desktop-like power to be re-located very frequently. e.g. having a very powerful CPU and GPU for 4 hours each day on two different places. Tablets can't do it unless the price / over value is insane and two desktops are twice the cost / value plus they have syncing issues.

Laptops have shrinked technology that makes them worse, however, they are at that first only level of shrinking. Go any deeper and it's practically impossible to justify the cost / value for the same performance. And of course there isn't even practically an alternative when it goes to powerful CPUs and GPUs.

Now what is a deciding factor is that small factor desktops are BIG and HEAVY compared even to a 17'' laptop (well, unless you go to insane 20'' laptops, in that case I'd say better carry a monitor and a miniATX around).

So, one can't just say 'replace a 17'' with a miniATX' because they are practically heavier. And they are insanely harder to setup compared to just 2 USB devices.
