MechWarrior/Battletech Thread!
« on: Thu, 26 September 2013, 21:01:56 »
Since there's at least a couple other BT/MW fans here, lets have a little discussion.

Favorite Game? Favorite Novel? Favorite Build? Favorite 'Mech?

I liked what I played of MW3, but I got a ton of experience in 4 and Online.

I really like the Blood of Kerensky series and the Warrior series, but the Civil War stuff isn't bad either. (Screw the 4th and 8th books of the Twilight series).

I enjoyed my Catapult Large pulse laser boat, but I currently run a Blackjack with 2 Large and 4 Medium lasers.

I'd have to say my favorite 'Mech is the Dire Wolf/Daishi, just because of the absurd amount of stuff you can do with it, since half of its tonnage is devoted to weapons.

This is awesome!  From ages 11-18 I played the Battletech Miniatures game.  I know it is cheesy, but favorite mech is the MadCat Prime variant.  Second is probably the Mauler.

I also played Mechwarrior, the I played the role-playing/miniatures, not the PC game.  I miss this stuff.  I still have all my old books and miniatures.  Too bad the whole thing got cannibalized and turned into an over-simplified "stats-in-base" game.

Still have not played the online game, but I want to.  I don't like, however, that you have to pay for better mechs.  Because of this, do you think it would be difficult to start playing?

I really need to get the Miniatures game...

the Timber Wolf Prime is a fine 'Mech, but even more absurd is the Timber Wolf D. 4 SSRM6, 2 ERPPCs.

Really, you can buy all the regular 'Mechs with in-game currency, so you just have to grind a bit to get new 'Mechs. You also get access to 4 free 'Mechs that rotate out each month that you can build money with, but you can't customize. As long as you can get into the combat, it's not a difficult game to get into.

I never got super into Mechwarrior, but I loved the PC games and I still play them occasionally. I gave MW Online a try but I really sucked at it.

I was always a fan of the Mad Cat as well.

Oh yeah!  I forgot about the D.  The gamemasters would never let us play that variant though :(

I played MechWarrior 2 when I was young and it was such a nice game. My favorite Mech was Nova with tons of medium lasers, speed, jetpack and cooling. I would come fast and aim at legs and run away!

Good god, the Black Hawk. That is about as cheese as you can get stock, besides sticking a Gauss on a 35 ton 'Mech a la Kit Fox A

Anyone ever play Mechcommander?  I loved that game!  One of the best opening cinematics I'd ever seen.

i would like to play also. it seems my pace, as I cannot keep up with the super fast shooters now that I'm OLD...

Does it support voice chat so we can all play together

Well, if you want to get into MWO, you just go to http://www.mwomercs.com, sign up for an account, and download it.

No, it doesn't support voice chat, but we could set up a TeamSpeak or something, as I've been looking into it, or, if you want to get your ears raped, a community place, called No Guts, No Galaxy, has a TeamSpeak. I would go for the private Teamspeak or mumble or vent or whatever.

How dated is the game? Do a lot of people still play? Also, in regards to voice chat, we could always use RaidCall.

Well, it just "launched" a couple of days ago, though it's been in beta for over a year, and it's still lacking some "immersion" features that hardcore fans of the series have been waiting for, like faction loyalty, merc corps, etc.

Yes, quite a few people still play last I checked.

A word of warning, though: The game is pretty poorly optimized, though it could be worse (like Planetside 2 6 months ago). I can barely run it (though my computer pales in comparison to some rigs around here. YMMV, I'm on a HD 6850) on low with decent Frame Rates.

BY THE WAY: If anyone wants to add me on their friends list for easy playing together, in game name is Inteli, because **** letters. This is a name, not a handle.
