Help with first mech kb. Wasd vs shine 3
« on: Mon, 28 October 2013, 20:22:29 »
Hi all,

I am about to buy my first mechanical keyboard. I'm coming from a Microsoft sidewinder x4. I narrowed it down it either a ducky shine 3 (possible yots) or wasd v2, though I am still open to suggestions. I want a full size kb that looks sexy. I like backlighting, but my sidewinder is so disgusting now. By that I mean the key caps are really scratched up and you can't even see the original letter (just a scratchy glowy mess). Does this happen with all translucent keycaps? If the shine 3's keycaps will wear like this, then I will 100% go with wasd.

Second, is the aluminum top on the yots worth 70 extra dollars? Obviously a personal question, but I am wondering if there is really any benefit besides looks.

Third, I was trying out both blues and browns at best buy, and I liked blues except for the fact that I felt a little "stuck" when double tapping. There is a little hitch when releasing a blue switch, and when I tried double tapping, many times it felt more comfortable to not let the key go past that hitch on the way up. My question is since the kb wasn't hooked up to a computer, I don't know if double tapping the switch that way will actuate the switch once or twice. Can anyone answer that question? If it only actuates once I will be forced to choose browns as I like tactile feel but I double tap a lot in games and being able to do it easily is essential. Damn did blues feel nice when typing regularly though.

Any other suggestions?

If anyone read this essay and could answer my questions I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks!

for mx Clear, you'd have to wait before the supply of them ramps up.

for mx Brown,  get whatever is in ur budget..

If you need backlit, there's the Shine 3 and that's pretty much it...

If you can make due with a smaller keyboard.. there's also the new plated poker 2..

The "DECK" brand is also backlit, but they have this weird looking font.. if you're cool with that.. then get the deck..

As for the "hitch" that you're talking about...  the brown/red/black will have no hitch..  blue and clear sort of "hitches" because the bump takes slightly longer to reset.

For starters, brown is a safer bet, especially for mixture of gaming and typing. Blue is not very good for double-tapping.

Get the shine 3, and a YOTS if you can find one. WASD V2 only lives up to its full potential when you have a custom printed keycap set, but still they aren't that good. AND the V2 is more expensive than a Shine 3.

He has three browns, just as a point of note. Of course, I have only a Blue/Red/Green.
First choice should be whatever you like the most. Brown is safe because it's a hybrid switch, but it'll reset just like the Blue for double-tapping, although the softer feel and less tactility can be better for gaming. I of course recommend the Blue, but I feel as if I could type almost as well on a Brown.

Thanks for all the replies! Right now I am leaning towards a mx brown v2 from wasd with a custom keycap set--they don't charge extra to customize if you buy the keyboard, right?

Two things I am still concerned about:

1) Will the translucent caps on the Shine III wear easily like my sidewinder keycaps? A lot of my more used keys just have big holes where light comes through now and it looks horrible.

2) If I double-tap blues without going past the "bump" on the way back up the first time (only right TO the bump, not past it, so only one click for two taps), does the computer count that as 2 keystrokes or one?

Thanks again for the responses, I really appreciate your help.

The caps will not fade, they're laser etched and so far even my QFR caps which are said to be worse than Shine 3 haven't faded in six months of very heavy use.
Blues will not actuate twice if you only have on click; click is pretty much actuation point which is why Blues aren't good for double tapping. For Browns, you still need to go past the bump but it's less sharp so it might be better for double-tapping than Blues.

For both Blues and Browns..the actuation point is after the bump...The actuation is pressing the switch about halfway down.  The bump on blues is actually closer to that point than browns...

BUT, blues don't reset until you've come back up quite a bit..it actually isn't that far but significantly further than browns..so what that means is if you double tap, if you tap the 2nd time before the switch has a chance to reset, it won't register the 2nd time.  For browns that point is the same point of actuation and so you're far less likely to have an issue...
