Electric Guitar equivalent of QFR
« on: Tue, 12 November 2013, 16:42:01 »
Experts, plz halp !!

I'd like to get one without crazy features that I'd never use.. for example, a keyboard with (backlit, programmable keys)

Basically.. the No-Nonsense Guitar..

Some sort of Easy maintenance design if possible..

I don't want to buy any more guitars after this one.. ever again...

I am doing my best not to start another keyboard hobby..

Yeah, go for a Squier branded one. They are less expensive, like QFR.

This is what I bought for my first as well.  Great starter.  You can then upgrade the pickups at a later date if you wanted.

Edit:  I actually have a Strat, not a Tele.

Squire is the monoprice.

I would say the Standard is what you want: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/fender-standard-telecaster-electric-guitar/h76527#productDetail

The pricier versions are American made and some would argue superior in quality.

Fender (Squire) Telecaster.

This is the version I would go with as a QFR,

I do agree with this that standards are better, but I would have to argue with the 50's vibe telecaster you are getting a great bang for the buck.

I have problems with epiphone but this is also a valid answer.

lol a telecaster? really guys?

Also as a general rule, Squires are trash. There are a few really decent models that they made though.

If you want a decent electric, a made in mexico (mim) fender strat wouldnt be bad.

You REALLY need to go to a guitar shop and try some out though. you really do. There is so much variance in the feel of the necks between different brands. I would avoid getting a guitar with a floyd rose unless you really want that. They are such a pain in the ass. With electrics the most important thing is the feel of the neck and the quality of the fretwork. Most of the tone is going to come from your amp, although the pickups are important in that too.

If you want an acoustic, yamaha will give you the best bang for your buck.

Very much appreciate the discount Binge... but would you say that's qfr?

The large discrepancies in price tiers coming up is weird.. since everyone agrees on the QFR.

I had thought there'd be something similar on the Guitar.

Gotcha.  I read into the QFR reference as something you can get cheap and make it what you want.  If no tinkering, an older Japanese made squire, or one of the other units recommended.

If I was buying again as a beginner, my $$ would go here:  http://www.guitarcenter.com/Epiphone-Les-Paul-Special-II-Electric-Guitar-100001870-i1149986.gc?CJAID=10449560&CJPID=1759905

I had thought there'd be something similar on the Guitar.

Guitars are not often made by engineers-- they're made by luthiers.  Some luthiers are very much so engineers but there are factors which people often overlook when making a guitar.

I went down the guitar rabbit hole some time ago... If you play every day like I used to I do not recommend you buy anything without first knowing you have a shop that will keep your guitar in good working condition over the years... and I mean refret your guitar etc etc etc etc... otherwise it will just turn into trash.

I wore several fenders, gibsons, ESPs, and Schecters into the ground.  The only guitars I have not been able to crack are Parkers and Steignbergers.  I can play them like nuts and live in bumfuk PA around no shops without having to take it in for fretwork or other more complicated setups.

On that note... Fender american quality at a fraction of the price http://www.carvinguitars.com/
