Just got my Filco MJ2 Ninja Mx Blue!

Hi all,

This is my first post on GH but i have ben around for some time. Just got my new Filco MJ2 Ninja Mx Blue and i have to say wow what a nice keyboard! This is my third mechanical keyboard but this one is really special. I have owned SteelSeries 6gv2 Mx Red and QPAD MK-80 Mx Blue. These two feels like toys compared to the filco. I hope to have this keyboard for many years. I just wanted to share my initial thoughts with you guys Peace..

Would you say that the switches feel any different on your two blue boards? As far as blues, I only own the daskeyboard and I'm wondering if I should get something a little better, or try wait and try out some clears.

I just got my filco with browns!
I had a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate with blues, which I loved (the blues, not the Razer). I decided to go with browns because they're better for gaming (especially starcraft 2, which you need to be able to double tap on - something blues have a hard time with). I was really excited to get mine. This whole time I've been looking at getting an aluminum case for it because I thought it would be similar to the black widow (plasticy and cheaply built). I was extremely surprised, however, when I opened the thing up and felt how sturdy it is. I kind of feel like changing the case on it would be a disservice to it. I want to be able to show other people what a plastic keyboard SHOULD feel like. I may get a korean custom later on, which will have an aluminum case- but for the mean time I think I'm going to just keep whats on it (unless I see something really special on the group buy that I just have to have  ).

Did you lube your stabilizers, by any chance? Custom keycaps? Are you going to change the wire on it?

Very nice choice, I'm very happy with my Filcos as well. If I can offer one piece of advice, get yourself some PBT caps (ideally thick) it makes the board feel that much better. I'm actually eyeing out a set of these for my TKL http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=50935.0

Yea!! I am a proud owner of a Steel Series 6gv2 too. Why do you say it is toy compared to Filco?!!!! I mean Yea, FIlco is considerably the best quality. But Steel Series's quality is no joke either. and as you may know 6gv2 has this elegant concave body to is simple, classic keyboard body which is design-wise very nice.

Anyway, i am quite similar to you, after typing on my red-switch for awhile now, i want to try out the much-talked about blues..

Initially i wanted to buy a Filco blue ninja tenkeyless, or may be a minila blue, or full 103u goodness of Filco.
Then, as i went deeper and deeper into realms of keyboards, i am tilting towards roccat ryos mk pro.
What made me change my mind is that Filco does not have window keyless function except in minila, and gaming camouflage version which does not have ninja version of it as well.
And Filco, dont have LED lighting which is fine with me totally sincce i have a 6gv2 myself, BUt , i had been thinking rececntly that after all, i might want to get a LED back lit one since i already have a non back lit one . AND, a backlit one will fit very nice with my Alienware m14x which has nice lighting all around as you may know.

So, i had these options as LED lit: much talked about Razer Black Widow 2013, the famous CM Storm quickfire Tk, CM Storm MECH, Roccat Ryos MK Pro. Ducky Shine 3

quickfire tk and ducky shine 3 although is nice in their backlighting is bland to me, i want a sort of Logitech G710 kind  style kind of keyboiard which leaves me with CM mech and roccat, and razer.

Razer i rejected because some people totally hates it despite it arguably is the largest gaming periperals company.
Which leaves me with CM mech and roccat, and boy, i got totally fascinated by their keyboard trailers, YOu SHOULD TOTALLY CHECK THEM OUT IF YOU HAVENT. hERE ARE THE LINKS:

For roccat ryos

The reason i dont like mech as much as that of ryos is that cmstorm mech has this handle thing that i find totally unneccessary, and roccat has ducky-style lighting. Meaning, it has reactive backlighting which means when you type a key, that keycap will lights up, and it has many others like ripple and waves and stuff , just like ducky. Given, roccat lighting is more subdued than ducky. And, quality wise, roccat is made in Germany if i am not wrong. Germany which also makes SteelSeries, like Japan which makes FIlcos and Topres, is one technological titan as well. So i am thinking i can trust their cherry switch key quality.

Downside is Roccat has 280 singdollar, while CM mech is about 220 , while a FIlco may cost around 180 to 200 depending on yoour taste.
But  i feel that high end keyboards are price inelastic and i dont mind paying abit more to get ducky-like lighting in my keyboard.

What do you guys think? Convince me to get a FIlco.

By the way thread starter, You Made the Right decision getting a Filco. No haters and trolls on the internet can deny that Filco beat razer, cm, roccat, or steelseries hands down!!! I am just different bcuz  i am thinking of backlighting which Filco sadly still havent offer.

Dont get me wrong, Cm storm is still your top dog go-to keyboard vendor. Just preference here.

I dont think roccat makes any mech boards.

I see your point. I have used G80-3000 with MX Blues for years at work and I think it's ok, but nothing spectacular - it's been worn out for long time but it works fine and much better than any other keyboards in the office (G80s are the only mechanicals here). When I bought my first Filco I opted for browns and I enjoyed this keyboard more than company G80.
Recently (well it's been half year now) I was looking for a replacement for RealForce at home and got myself Filco with MX Blues. Of course stock keycaps are not that great but after replacing with PBT caps it became my all time favourite. Before that my favourite was Unicomp BS (I like them more than IBM). While MX doesn't have the superb tactility of BS it has it's advantages over it: it's more consistent, lighter (hands don't get tired) and Filco build quality beats Unicomp and even IBM easily.

Yeah the switches feels different compared to MK-80. Its hard to explain but the MK-80 has more of a clicky but squeaky loose sound, while the Filco MJ2 has more of a Klicky-clacky more sturdy sound. It just feels much better

I think i have to lube my stabilazers especially the backspace is a little bit squeaky! I may change to custom keycaps later on. No im not going to change the wire.

Im not into keyboards with backlighting. I tried Ducky Shine 3 with white leds but became dizzy of the white backlight even if i had them on the lowest brightness. The keyboard was OK but i like the feel of filco much more. I even tried a ROCCAT Ryos MK Glow but it felt like my old Logitech G15! I dont know why :)) Just my opinion.

I would say go with the filco. I think you will end up with a filco anyway  :)

It technically has the least "perceptible" friction points..  because upon down-stroke, the only friction point that can be felt is reduced to the center spring holster shaft,  then @ ~1.5mm you can detect the front 2 prongs and side slider guide,  while @ 2.5mm those friction points disengage because the slider springs downwards..

from that point until the bottom out, you only feel the center spring holster shaft

Upon upstroke, again similar thing happens because, where also the center spring holster shaft is the only friction point..




So technically on MX blue, should be the least friction-al switch..

Btw im done lubing all the stabilizers on my filco. Great results!! All the big keys are stable now. It took about 1 hour or so.

I used this White Lithium Grease:

I lubed stabilisers using normal vaseline when changing keycaps. Must say it's smoother and doesn't squeak as it used to.

Vaseline Runs in the summer.. keep that in mind
