Haunted Computers
« on: Wed, 28 October 2020, 01:05:02 »
Disclaimer: I don't actually believe in the supernatural. This is just for fun since it is Halloween time.

The earliest gaming computer my family had (that I remember) was a Commodore Amiga 1000. The games on this computer terrified me, even non-horror ones like Roger Rabbit and The Three Stooges. To this day, there is something about old computer games that gives me the creeps; it's something about the sound design and the graphics. In particular, a game called IT Came From The Desert has haunted my dreams. To this day, I still have dreams in which I am forced to play this game or am living the game, and the computer won't turn off or pause or anything. Most of the time, the game is actually different, but it's supposed to be this one. Oddly, I only watched my brother play this game, only attempting to play it myself once some years later. However, my brother has indicated that this game still haunts him as well (I'm not sure if in dreams or just a general terror). This terror extends to the computer as well. The Amiga 1000 itself seems haunted to us. Four years ago, I tried to get the Amiga up and running again (and failed), and just its presence on the kitchen table unpowered was somewhat disconcerting. I tried to face my fears by watching a longplay of the game a little while back, but it did not help.

Similarly, the game Return to Zork scared me to the point that even seeing the CD case in my room freaks me out a bit.

I also regularly have dreams in which I am stuck in an old school 2.5D Doom level fighting hordes of demons. These are not quite scary, more so restless and stressful.

Has anyone else had a "haunted" or "haunting" computer or computer game?
Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

The Missingno glitch in Red/Blue creeped me out as a kid. I knew about Missingno and how to find it, but what I didn't know or heard anything about up to then was how if you view its entry after beating the game it corrupts your save and sound. I remember the game freezing then making this horrible loud noise so I reset. The game file name was that blocky garbled text, and when you get into the game text was illegible and many objects were glitched out or using wrong sprites. I wound up pulling the battery to wipe it and everything returned to normal.

Oh, yeah! I remember that viewing the Hall of Fame after doing the trick produced an endless random stream of corrupted Pokemon with random calls (the animal sounds the Pokemon made). One that I remember in particular was a really long, low pitched hum while it showed a corrupted member of Team Rocket, IIRC. Yeah, that definitely creeped me out too.

So far the only game that creeped me out was the first Resident Evil when it released on PS1 - oh and the 1st Silent Hill, but I now love to go back and play them still, but I just wish they'd release a new Silent Hill.

the only time i got slightly creeped out by a computer is when i tried a new OS on an old machine that i did not know had an integrated speaker, and the thing started speaking took me a few seconds to understand what did it and how it could, cause i had only plugged a keyboard and screen to it. when you know they are there integrated speakers are not great at best but when you do not, and so far all you ever heard from a tower is beep it can be strange. (for context it was an old HP tower in 2006 or there about)
