Shogun Bros. Mech???
« on: Wed, 11 December 2013, 00:23:31 »
Was browsing evike looking at random airsoft guns when I saw:

http://www.evike.com/products/41448/

Did not expect to see mechs on there, let alone genuine cherry blacks.

But these cases look like those kailia fake yellow switch boards. Does anyone know if they are genuine cherrys or just more chinese fakes?

Looks like a Rapoo V7 which uses bootleg MX switches.

Edit: Though this one apparently doesn't.

this may be an ignorant question, but wouldn't they claim genuine cherry even if it's using fake cherry clones?

Here is supposedly that keyboards manufacturer website:

Not that I love to grill people over the use of wording but on neither of the two sites (not evike not even shogunbros) mentioned it is Cherry MX black. The correct wording evike used was:
Shogun Bros. Cross Blade Mobile Command Mechanical Keyboard - WASD / Direction Black Cherry Keys

On the actual manufacturer website, it is only stated as:

Germany Cherry Mechanical Switches

It does state Cherry MX black, Cherry black MX or even black Cherry MX. "Black Cherry Keys" can be a bit ambiguous, evike was probably trying to point out the keycaps/keyboard case are painted black which obviously they are. Then again it does not state that it is Cherry MX black switches.

Also nowhere on either of the two sites did they mention they used genuine Cherry MX switches. Sure they both have boasted that it is German made Cherry MX and that the keyboard is stated to be 50 million key strokes but not going as far as saying that it is really a genuine Cherry MX switches. This basically could give them a bit of a "foothold" to hold onto should either or both of them face legal battles when the products were found to be using fake Cherry MX switches.

Ah yea this is probally the reason why its so vague.

There are actually two versions of this keyboard. One of them is all real MX Black switches; the other one has real MX Black switches on WASD and the arrow keys, and red Kailh switches on the rest. Some of the other sales channels are a bit more explicit about this.

Now the tricky part will be figuring out which of the two versions you're going to get...

If you look at the ad that you've linked, it states "WASD / Direction Black Cherry Keys". This suggests that it is probably the "mixed stroke" version, with eight MX Black switches (on WASD and the arrow keys) and red Kailh for the rest.

I bought one of these exact keyboards, but with a different model name (Genius M1).  It had the fake Red (Kailh) switches, which I swapped out for genuine Clears. Not a bad board for $45 shipped to US, but not ideal for gaming (only 2KRO).

I would actually consider 4kro minimum for effective keyboard use..

if I had to type  Point   with capital "P"

shift-P, -role single motion- o-i-n..

there is a high likely hood that with only 2kro the " o " or "i" would get dropped

because the p-o-i-n is one fast smooth motion for the right hand...

and "P"  and "O" may not disengage prior to engaging "I" and "N"  ..

These situations can crop up in other tri-quad graphs..

The stock caps are HORRIBLE! Can barely read the legends...

If you replaced the keycaps and got better stabs for it, these boards wouldn't be too bad tho. But then again, 2KRO...

Yea I agree you'd have to be in deep destituteness to save $20 by choosing the rapoo over a quickfire rapid on sale.

They're great for learning how to solder/desolder switches tho. Not much to lose if you mess up and destroy the PCB...

you can't mess up and destroy the pcb short of literally setting it on fire, and "letting it burn"..

even major cracks are fixable.

that doesn't mean you've never had a ROerror. <hahaha is this a new word, if so I'm calling it..

it only means you've never noticed, or bother to find out if the error was a hardware limitation vs cold fingers..

tp4, you're forgetting that 2KRO doesn't mean strictly a max of 2 keys registered at a time. It's all dependent on the matrix. A keyboard may be considered 2KRO, but multiple keys in the vicinity of one another can still be registered simultaneously (I know for a fact certain areas of the Model M matrix are "4KRO" at least).
