Hi-End Laptop Replacement... HHKB + Tablet?
« on: Thu, 02 January 2014, 17:32:13 »
So I've got my Desktop, and I've got my ***** work laptop Lenovo X201.  I've been considering a another hi-end laptop for the possibility of losing my desktop.  The idea I've had, and I believe most of everyone on here was to create a semi-mech keyboard laptop.  The issue is it would always be bulky as hell and look pretty stupid.  So I've been thinking with the new Intregrated & Discrete Graphics we've actually come a pretty long way.  So I was thinking how long would it be for a tablet with the same screen dimensions as a good laptop be available.

The key points to this Tablet
  • Processor that can keep up with say the Macbook Pros
  • Good Descrete Graphics
  • Matte Screen (I guess this could be fixed with film)
  • Can completely act like a legitimate Computer
  • Have USB 3.0 Ports
  • SD Card Reader (Not that big of a deal if its got a couple USB 3.0s
  • HDMI
  • Headphone/Microphone Jack
  • GbE Lan

I'm assuming this product doesn't exist yet?

Integrated graphics has come a long way now and can drive up to 3 screens since Intel i-series Gen3 (not sure if it increased for Gen 4).

Go for the Surface Pr0 2 with docking station and attach whatever mech KB you want.
Though the docking station's ethernet is only at 100 Mbps (MS taking 2 steps forward and 1 step back I guess).
Has everything else you listed and you can get a mini DP to HDMI adapter/cable for video out.
A planned future update will allow daisy chaining of multiple monitors via the mini-DP.

Or consider an Asus gaming laptop if you need discrete graphics. If higher budget, then maybe the custom hi-end stuff from Sager/Clevo, etc.

I have not encountered a tablet with all those characteristics (not that I am familiar with all tablets, I just haven't seen one quite like that).

Processor that can keep up with say the Macbook Pros - tablet processors are good, but not quite at that league
Good Descrete Graphics - not in a tablet; tablet GPUs are good at doing tablet things, not laptop things; also power issues with a high-end graphics adaptor
Matte Screen (I guess this could be fixed with film) - film might reduce the touch sensitivity of a tablet
Can completely act like a legitimate Computer - running what OS?  Windows?!?
Have USB 3.0 Ports - maybe
SD Card Reader (Not that big of a deal if its got a couple USB 3.0s - probably; I think some Android tablets have this already
HDMI - most tablets support this, it seems to be the new video standard
Headphone/Microphone Jack - most, if not all, tablets have a headphone jack, not sure if any have a microphone jack
GbE Lan - good luck!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Today you can get
  • Intel Core i5-4300U (1.9 GHz Dual-Core)
  • Integrated Graphics Chip (Intel HD 4400)
  • 10.6" 1920x1080 non-glossy Display
  • single USB 3.0 Port
  • microSDXC Card Reader
  • Mini DisplayPort (can connect to HDMI)

In combination with a Docking Station you get
  • another Mini DisplayPort
  • 3.5mm audio in
  • 3.5mm audio out
  • another USB 3.0 Port
  • three USB 2.0 Ports
  • 10/100Mbit Ethernet (GbE is only a matter of time)

It is called Microsoft Surface Pro 2.
Don't get me wrong i am not advertising Microsoft products in particular, but alternatives like Dell Venue 11 Pro do not ship all the features.

It's pretty phenomenal what one can get in a tablet these days.  Basically the power and functionality of a laptop with a touchscreen.

I went to the Microsoft store to play with the Surface Pro 2 and other Windows 8 tablets.   Windows 8 get a bad rap, but I figured it out quickly enough and I would take it over iPad operating system.  The iPad just strikes me as an entertainment device first, and makes too many sacrifices if I wish to do other tasks.

Ultimately, those tablet screens just feel too tiny if you want to use the thing as Laptop replacement.  Throw in the cost for a decent monitor, and your costs start to rise quickly.

I have been wondering if Apple is going to release something like a Macbook Air/iPad combo, and they will start snowballing their tablets and laptops altogether as we all wear phone watches and tacky glasses.

Wish I had some gif or quote for this space, but I got nothing

Oh here we go:

http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/01/03/analyst-predicts-apple-will-transform-notebook-market-with-12-inch-hybrid-ipad-pro-this-fall

I predict Apple will crush it in 2014.

possible... but honestly touch screen is so horrible to use.. I would NEVER want to use it for extended periods of time..

No it's not, I use a Lenovo Yogabook a lot and having the touch screen is awesome.
