finally in the market for a GOOD keyboard
« on: Wed, 05 February 2014, 17:40:19 »
I'm a MAC user. Own a macPro and do a lot of coding and media stuff. Really tired of the apple keyboard that I have and now i'm looking around a good keyboard w/ a slight tactile feel. I also game a lot more now since my xbox took a crap. So i'm taking that into consideration as well.

I've had my eye on the Vengeance  K70 Fully Mechanical Gaming Keyboard — Cherry MX Brown for a while now and i'm very close to hitting that purchase button. I like that it has the subtle tactile feedback because I type a lot. I would prefer a red backlight as supposed to blue, but I can live with that.

But, I would really like to know what you guys think of the keyboard. Especially for somebody who uses a OS X on a typical basis.

There's really no way to know which type of switch you're going to prefer, so I suggest get a QFR with one of the most common switch types. A corsair with browns would probably be fine if you prefer it. If I were you though, I'd get a switch tester first. You'll save yourself a lot of money.

+1 on the thoughts of QFR, they are fairly popular (pending on the exact model you choose) and fairly well received (again pending on the exact model).

Alternative to switch testers (which some have voiced their concerns over the lack of being able to precisely predict whether or not would the X, Y, or Z would suit them. I would suggest getting into keyboard tours for instance as well. Along with that some shops may allow one to try out the keyboard prior to purchasing.

I'd try to find a board that has the command keys a little further in to the middle than most. It'll make Mac keyboard shortcuts a little more comfortable on your thumbs.

All depends on your hands. I'm a Mac user and I find most boards (except the cherry ones with 1x modifiers) fine for command shortcuts on OS X.

I don't think the K70 really works on OSX.... Anyway.... Ducky, Keycool, and some others are backlit.
Ducky has some really nice keyboards.

if you like Corsair's casing, go for it, because nobody else makes a keyboard with a similar casing.

but if you want to customize the keycaps, better get a Ducky because the layout is standard and Ducky makes keycap sets for its backlit keyboards.
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

As a Mac user, I've become a huge fan of the 60% form factor which is pretty similar to Apple's BT keyboard at least in terms of footprint. Compact keyboards aren't for everyone and may represent too much of a compromise for you.

Several people have made good suggestions already, such as QFR and Ducky, but if I opted to go for a Tenkeyless, or full-sized keyboard, I think the Code Keyboard is a pretty nice choice.

Hope that helps!

since you are a mac user i would go with a matias. it is the mac board that has the most authentic old school mac style. it is alps just like the old mac boards before apple started making ****ty keyboards. also a matias board can be very cube friendly if you want to take it to work.

for sometime now mx blues has been my favorite switch.
