They cut a piece of glass.. then it glues onto your phone screen.. so as to (protect it)

I used the Spigen GlasR iPhone 5 protector with no other protection and it held up well. And then it took a huge drop, cracked, but it served its purpose and protected my screen.

In other words, if you have the money to shell out because you like your phone caseless, then this would be a good solution.

For me, being able to use my phone caseless without worrying about screen shattering was worth it. Spigen was one of the first companies to sell these glass protectors and have since then come up with many improvements.

i camped on their site for almost 8 mins, quite a long time on the internet..

I don't see any metric, that they use for their product..  besides 8h-9h which all of the manufacturers claim

glass screen protectors are screen protectors that feel like glass.  obviously.

why use them?  because other screen protectors are plastic and feel horrible.

I use a spien glass protector.

I used to use higher end plastic protectors, and loved it. Then I got a glass one for my current phone, and a year later, its still awesome! It's significantly more scratch resistant (well this one is anyway), and optically superior, especially after using it a while where your plastic one is scratched up. The disadvantage is its thickness, hiding the hardware button deeper, and making tight cases are trickier fit if it covers too much of the front edge.

Only problem is cracking, and after dropping my phone, managed to crack my protector. Its got a line diagonally snaking up from the left middle to the top right, but it doesnt stop me using it.

My next screen protector will be another glass

TBH, I think screen protectors are over-rated.  I stopped using them 10 years ago, back when screens could actually get damaged.  Nowadays, it's a waste of money, IMO.  Plus you will probably lose or break your phone before you rub off the screen surface.  Spend your money on something else.

my question is this: how does a glass screen protector protect your glass screen? The glass they use in the screens already has some excellent properties?

I use a plastic one, as polymers they use tend to have a very high toughness. It's also more slick.

Well, the primary reason for Glass, is because it's more transparent than the plastic ones, the difference is very apparent if you looking at your phone at an angle.

So it's a visual advantage.

As far as protection.. the glass screen doesn't scratch as easily..

but as far as DROP protection...   there is no advantage to the glass screen over a plastic one..

it will provide the same drop protection with the exception of the fact that the glass protector will probably crack, and you'll have to buy a new one..

They're now only $13 on ebay $15 on amazon..  so it's really quite inexpensive.. they used to be like $50-70,  so that would've been a stupidly expensive purchase...

I really don't think the higher priced versions are justified..  they all come from the same oems..

a glass screen protector is to protect against scratches.  not everyone is bothered by scratches, but some people are.

screens are pretty tough nowadays, but they get scratched ALL THE TIME.   beach sand is absolutely horrendous.

basically, think of the glass screen protector as an instant screen replacement.  screen gets damaged, don't bother going to the store.  just rip off the screen protector and voila, the easiest diy screen replacement....you didn't even need a screwdriver.

So I dunno about you guys, but my glass screen is pretty scratch resistant. It's an ion impregnated ceramic common in modern cellphones. You can scribble on it with a razor blade, knife or keys with some force and not scratch it.

I'm just not seeing how it can get scratched in the first place, much less how another layer of glass will help anything.

The OCD people like myself who rather keep the original screen scratch free so that when it comes time to decommission a phone due to obsolescence, it has a pristine screen!!  :p

Ok, that aside, I have used my phones without protectors for two weeks (delivery time for protector), and put a few scratches on it. Scratches are not a big deal physically or functionally, but those scratches are a fair effort to fix because its a screen replacement. Therefore, these scratches are a big deal….

I have used a glass protector on my current phone, and after a year of use, I have put in a few good scratches, but nothing that bothers me as much as the few on the real screen. Secondly, the first few weeks of use of the exposed screen was with a high level of care, as we give to new products, but the last year of use with the protector was not exactly gentle, so there is a practical difference in the hardness of the actual glass.

This new glass protector is definitely hard enough to not be too worried about putting keys on the screen. That peace of mind allows me to enjoy the device, and not let my OCD stop me from doing so.

Plastic protectors do not last anywhere NEAR as long as a glass one. Initially their all good, but after a short while of scratching, buffing, abrasion, the glass one still looks like new, the plastic one really drops in optical quality, and thus you get a gently degrading ability to enjoy your expensive screen.
