Modbook Pro...pretty awesome or meh?

I'm thinking these guys are ahead of their time creating this business class, desktop class, Mac hardware, OSX, tablet option.

Whether you need it or not is a separate issue.

The keys on the backside are interesting.

Why would Apple let this exist?
They have come down so hard on anyone selling or trying to sell OS-X in anything other than an Apple made product...

It IS an Apple made product, it's being modified.

And then resold in a package made by people other than Apple... I'm not really for or against it, I just don't think it's something that will ever come out because of how protective Apple are over there products.

I just thought it's an interesting product, a Mac tablet on steroids, or a Mac laptop in a tablet configuration. Meets the wants of a select group of peeps.

Yeah it's a cool device for sure, if not a little niche ;)

TOTALLY NICHE

Could have the same thing if Apple simpley made the screen of a laptop fold over like a couple PC laptops do.

it's a pretty interesting concept, I'd like to know how the pen actually works. The distance of the glass to the LCD is often a problem when dealing with these kind of devices (cintiq and the like)...

anyway this makes me even more depressed because I have to install a windows machine since nor linux nor mac have some of the softwares I need for the CNC...

Modbook have been around since like 2007. I first saw them in '08. It looked a lot easier to mod those non-unibody ones :p

I've always been a fan of them. Good to see they made the change to unibody MBP and again to retina.

matteo: since the glass is thin and bonded to the panel on these, there's not too much distance to the digitizer: though I agree this is a big thing to be worried about. I have had a lot of experience with the business-class (not consumer grade) tablets from lenovo, fujitsu, dell, hp and toshiba from the last 5 years or so. Depending on what you are doing with it, it might be useful or useless, and the pen-to-screen distance might be important.

Hmm, I'm somewhat skeptical that this thing outperforms a 2014 mac pro across the board. It's got those GPUs, and that quad-core 3.7GHz xeon. Maybe they all hit the SSD or something.

Also keep in mind that he 1TB SSD in the MBPr is like the fasting thing right now.

I just saw an Apple patent application for a convertible tablet/keyboard/thingy similar to the Microsoft multi-configurable tablet-keyboard that's advertised on TV. Is that the Surface?

You can run, you can hide, but in the end, everyone wants and needs A KEYBOARD!

The only thing that's ever been useful on a tablet EVER, was ridiculous fishing...     that's it..

There is not a single other reason I'd use a tablet over a full laptop.

I've enjoyed using iPad Mini for content consumption (reading, web surf, GH, email) and recently very light document creating (word processor, spreadsheet) and the portability traveling, around town, and even at home is unmatched. I doubt a larger iPhone (in a few days!) can't compare. It's perhaps it's an "in-between" product that bridges a gap...and I'm fine with that, along with millions of others. For $200-300 (not $600) for an item that will not be upgraded for 3-4 years. I can't see why one would upgrade as long as the unit you have works. Just not that mission critical as a consumption device.

I really don't feel like it bridges any gap..

most tablets that are Large enough to be even remotely productive  VS a phone,  is already too large to be as portable as a phone...   and that would make it almost equivalent in portability as a laptop...

In which case, you might as well backpack-up and bring something to get-rr-done.

iPad Mini

as a GUY...

if it doesn't fit in a pocket... even cargo pants pockets...  then it has to go backpack

ipad mini is not pocketable.. even the Note 3, I'd consider not very pocket friendly..

I have to side with IN on this one. My brother routines carries around a paperback book (whatever he is reading at the time) in his pants.

We had to get tablet PCs so we could take notes in class. I took notes with a pen and paper so I almost never used mine.

Of course, now I'm sitting at my desk naked, jamming to Tiesto.
