Watch out for G3258 CPU combos this Black friday
« on: Thu, 30 October 2014, 14:15:54 »
Newegg just popped one to match the microcenter deal

$100 - $10 rebate,

msi z97 mobo + G3258 cpu

I got in on it.. this will be my 4th g3258 build this year.. (dadputer, uncleputer, htpc) Now, Momputer.

The deal is dead,  but I'm just saying it's definitely something to look out for this holiday, if you need a fun build that can hang with the big boys for HALF the price.

Thanks for the tip. Been debating a new htpc build since I'm kinda over the raspberry pi hype.

DO NOT buy a combo without a Z chipset,  either z87 or z97..   overclocking is MUCH easier with Z

what if I'm intersted in underclocking / undervolting for power consumption and cooling purposes?

You really don't need to underclock/undervolt g3258

it's haswell, so it can drop to 800mhz on idle.. voltage is dynamic

if you HAVE to be SUPER GREEN, you can keep C1e on with C3/6/7 off

C1e will ensure you have the lowest idle power..

ur not gonna find a cheap itx board that can overclock well..

if you do NOT overclock the G3258, ur probably better off getting an i3..

if you buy an ITX that can Overclock, it's gonna be like $150-200..  so... that's totally not worth it on a $50 cpu..

I've seeeeeen z97 itx for $100 after rebate and promo..   but that's still $50 more for the formfactor..

the CPU itself will be $50 maybe even $45  this holiday FOR SURE...

if ur not going to overclock.. save ur money for an H or B itx board, ~$50, and get an i3

the ONLY reason to get g3258 is to overclock.

I've had great results with asus h81m mobos and OC on the g3258. using CM 212 evo. 4.4GHz best stable result I dared try.

If you're wanting to make storage oriented build boost, perhaps look at some board like ASRock E3C224D4I-14S. ITX with 4 dimm slots, 4x sata3, 8x sas2, dual lan+ipmi onboard. It has some very nice features for 'entry level' server board price tier.

Here's a picture I found of it

Looks like people really use these for awesome disk builds.

This guy is ready to download the internet.

that's supremely expensive compared to some used server raid cards which will do the same thing on a much cheaper platform..
