Finally figured it out..

There doesn't seem to any windoz programs that will do random read/write testing..

So....

Just fill the entire drive with torrents.. set max number of connections to ~2000 so that it doesn't kill your router..

and you'll hear them musical random i/o clicks..

Finally figured it out: windows is a bad OS for testing things.

I can think of a few more that are more ubiquitous and popular than MHDD.

That said, it would appear that there are indeed several decent HDD diagnostics programs available for your OS of choice, unfortunate though it may be.

You can use all the posted methods on an external..

HOWEVER.. it's not recommended unless the external has active cooling..

If it's a 5400rpm drive, it might be ok....  but NOT if it's a 7200rpm drive. (usually too hot)
