Denzel doin' -Good-
« on: Mon, 15 December 2014, 15:12:11 »
So I just started watching.. -The Equalizer-

Denzel washington intervenes in the life of a spiraling young girl prostitute.

I'm about 15mins into the movie, and I thought,    Could they have made this movie with a young black girl..

I thought this, and the answer is Probably NOT..

the white girl has a monopoly on the maiden in distress cliche..

The movie would be much more difficult to monetize because then it would be identical to all the other million white guy saves white girl movies..  LOLOL

The key shtick in this movie is that the black man may wield the moniker of an "unlikely savior"..

if they used a white guy as an "unlikely savior", the dude would probably be a drunkard or does drugs..

yet, with the black guy,  suddenly all he'd have to be is black.. hahaha..

Racism is alive and well hahahaha... thanks hollywood..

LOL I just watched this also.  I liked it.

Not sure about the racist thing.  Could have just as easily been Bruce Willis.  Not everything has to be about race.

That's the thing.. LOOK at the bruce willis movies..  he always has some daughter in distress.

He always play this emotionally callous detached character..  that's his defect..

Then look at -The Equalizer-  What is denzel's flaw, he's god damn near perfect, he reads books at a cafe, he helps people.. NOTHING wrong with him...  THE ONLY thing that makes him the unlikely savior in this story arc.. is his race..

I can see what you mean about Bruce Willis; bad example on my part.

But I disagree about the race.  What makes him an unlikely savior is that he's a bookworm and seems to have a very boring existence.  Race doesn't have anything to do with the fact that he likes to read, keeps to the same boring routine every day, etc.

ur right.. it's open to interpretation..

I am making the comparison to the -unlikely savior- white guy saves white girl formula,  I suppose if we decide that this film is a complete departure, then the claim could be made that they didn't leverage the race disparity..

One movie of his that really left a lasting impression on me was Inside Man. Highly recommended.

Edit: and Man on Fire.

I'm watching this now. I usually like Denzel movies, especially ones where he ends up as a badass.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

I can't remember if I have watched that already, I don't think I have...

Chaos Theory and Deja Vu are good though.

Hell yeah. I give that movie a watch every six months or so, one of my favourite action flicks.
It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

It's the one where he's assigned as a bodyguard to a little girl in Mexico, without spoiling too much, a lot goes wrong and a lot of people die.

I've downloaded The Equalizer yesterday, but the quality was ****ty, so I watched The Inside Man instead. Liked it.

YES I AM BAD
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

The movie is exploiting on a subtle racist euphemism: "his race" that "should not match his qualities"

Not really... It's because he's an old man that they underestimate him, not because he's black. You seriously think that's what it is? =/
