Fine Tuning Hearthstone Image quality.
« on: Thu, 02 April 2015, 19:15:08 »
Ok.. So Here are the 2 Options for Anti-Aliasing in Hearthstone

1 is not better than the other.. It's a PREFERENCE

Images below are

8xeq MSAA multisample and 8xeq SSAA supersample, respectively

MSAA, gives very sharp textures because the textures are untouched, but also not-antialiased

SSAA, gives a very "smooth" image and creates more realistic edges (soft), but loses that raw color "pop" from the textures, as SSAA acts on both textures AND edges, while MSAA only acts on edges.

Also... Keep in mind guys.. ONLY SSAA works on the 3D effects such as particles, the dust/smoke/explosions/spell circles/transparency /alpha textures

MSAA does not do any of those.. ^^^

Look at the 2 card paintings, there's a huge difference..

I'm not playing this deck, I'm just capturing image comparisons.

Here's a close up..

MSAA,  Then SSAA

Between MSAA and SSAA, the Edges are about equivalent, "though SSAA gives more realistic edges"

However,  the two settings behave differently when it comes to "Textures"

The MSAA doesn't do anything to the textures, it only acts on edges..

The SSAA is a whole-scene antialiasing, which means it will antialias Every pixel you feed in. This includes textures..

Notice the SSAA Priest looks much smoother and his edges are smooth,

Whereas the MSAA priest looks extremely blocky..

But Ya'll must remember,  this is a "PREFERENCE",  one is not better than the other..

MS looks way better. Always will.

I'd rather see defined pixels than have it look like someone smeared vaseline all over my screen. Same reason I hate DoF maxed out in games. Who honestly thinks maxed out DoF options looks good? As if I wanted to simulate being a myopic Mr. Magoo whilst being shot at or whatever.

Hahaha..  Yea I used to think so too.. Until I finally understood "what was being done"..

Again,, ONE is not better than the OTHER, it's a preference

SSAA is more realistic because it applies to the whole scene

MSAA can only work on edges..

Look here..  It's very hard to make out the MSAA words when it's small.

THe pictures are blown up, so you can read both,  but when they're 1:1..  the SSAA is very readable, while you may have difficulties reading the MSAA

I could potentially understand the argument for 3d games, but 2d SSAA looks gross.

Um.....

Well, that's not entirely true..

The SSAA image looks more 3-dimensional, EVEN the priest Texture..

The MSAA image has alot more COLOR-POP, however it looks FLAT, because the edges are too jagged..

MSAA for life.

I didn't expect this to turn into another Hurray THorpie style thread.. but, that's Geeklyfe for ya...

But I would like ya'll to reconsider the merits of both AA methods..

SSAA simulates in the computer how a human eye would deal with images..

MSAA does the same thing, but only on "edges" and not the whole image.. Everything that's not an edge is aliased.

Purely in hearthstone I prefer MSAA, but I see the merits in both methods in reality.
