The Fruit Thing with the Bag and the Banana
« on: Sat, 23 May 2015, 18:12:21 »
Does this really work,  or is it a myth..

They say'n bananas release ethylene gas, thereby expediting the ripening of any fruits trapped in a bag with them.

Also, why do all the websites say "brown paper bag"

what's wrong with plastic bag.. or a sealed tub of some sort.

I don't think you want to completely seal it up.

Hrrrmmmmmmmm....

So paper bags allow moisture to pass through..

Is moisture really that huge a problem?

What If I do this..    I put some powdered Rice in the bag,  or one of those desiccant packets.

I can only imagine the situation you would have to be in to ask questions like these.

BTW. Bananas are also shipped unripe and subjected to ethylene gas in the destination country to make them ripen there.

Also: pull your bananas apart to speed up the ripening process by a lot.

Here's the thing..

Somewhere,  some-internetz-guy wrote there is an O2/CO2/NO balance that has to be observed..

Are those also required gases for ripening? because it seems like the whole point of "fruit skin" is to keep atmosphere out..
