Global Warming..
« on: Wed, 22 June 2016, 12:44:07 »
So, the Grain belt moves north..

What's the big deal.. ??

There are already plans to grow corn in Canada.. No one is going hungry, we're just gonna eat canada corn..

So, people gotta move away from the coast.. Florida underwater..

We've already invented trucks and cars.. at worst, you've got legs.

As a business, well, ok,  don't invest in production facilities around the coast..

How is global warming a TERROR.. ?

It seems inconvenient yes,   but overall, most likely unstoppable at this point.. given that you can't tell people to stop buying their new iphones every year..

The Consumer demand is what's ultimately driving the production of greenhouse gasses..

If no one wanted to sit on their butts and not walk anywhere,  they wouldn't have built the gasoline cars to sell you.

Well, some 80% of the world's mega cities are on the coast and I believe around 40% of the world's population live within ~25 miles from the coast, so you have to consider massive displacement of populations as well as the relocation of those billions of people.  That doesn't touch on any of the other issues stemming from climate change either, just possible coastal flooding.

Yea,  ok..

But, it's a run-away situation at this point..

You can't suddenly expect the Consumer to stop utilizing modern amenities..  If they don't stop demanding --Stuff--,  the producers will never stop producing..

It has very little to do with how much carbon emission a car produces..   It has to do with the fact that people keep buying more cars..

I don't disagree with you about that, I just think that we should be actively trying to slow it down rather than just letting it ride because it's already happening.  If a pipe bursts in my house and has started flooding the basement, I'm still gonna try to stop the leak to minimize any further damage rather than letting it go just because one part has already flooded.

One of the larger issues of climate change is that it affects our food supply.  Everything is connected.  For example, with the bee populations plummeting, this can cause entire plant species to go extinct without pollination.  Without plants, no herbivores.  Without herbivores, no carnivores.  Without carnivores or herbivores, humans no longer exist.

Also, global warming is a small aspect of the larger issues of climate change and pollution that is happening.  It's not a simple matter of oh no we flooded a bit or oh no we have to grow a bit more north.  If we don't end it, then we could end up a whole new host of issues.

To name a few, due to pollution, there is a far higher concentration of carboxylic acid in the ocean and waterways which has literally dissolved much of the great barrier reef (and clams, muscles, oysters, etc for that matter) and been killing fish and plankton.  This is a major issue because most of our oxygen actually comes from ocean plankton in addition to vegetation.  If we continue burning fossil fuels and if the plankton levels continue to decrease drastically, then we would become short on oxygen and the earth would gradually suffocate.

Also, personally I believe in respecting our environment because this planet has existed for millions of years longer than we have and taken so long to evolve.  Now that we're willing to say **** this planet for the sake of driving 2km to get fast food is pretty darn self-absorbed.

Even though I loathe organized religion, I consider this to be one of the most beautiful and monumental things I have ever read:

Any engaged thinking person needs to actually read it in its entirety - just ignore the part about "God"

Thanks for sharing that. Though my worldview isn't influenced by any particular religion, I do agree with the [largely ignored] Catholic view of dominion instead of domination over the world by humanity.  Imo we are extremely self-absorbed as a species and only really tend to give a **** as long as we're rich and comfortable (or at least in western society).

Ridiculous...

Fulfillment of base needs // higher needs  is a prerequisite to self-actualization for ANYONE..

The Pope would have you believed that this fulfillment can come for free or by ways of religion and intellect alone..

I assure you the majority of Hungry people, even those not hungry, but who are paycheck to paycheck will NEVER self-actualize and be able to sympathize with the greater challenges humanity face against Externalities and the cruel competition against natural entropy.

The pope and all leaders of this type want for nothing, though they may be themselves actualized, they are not so readily willing to admit that a period of hedonism may be necessary in education to concretely allow any person to evaluate and differentiate a NEED from a WANT...

The important take away is that there is a COST to this personal enlightenment..  something of which the church doesn't pay for, as they only take, launder money, but never truly give..

Bankers and real-estate Love churches and organized religion for that very reason..

I think about it this way. We are living on a planet. The planet changes. We change. Climate changes. Therefore the temperature changes. At the moment the temperature is going up, eventually it will go down. We will enter another glacial period someday, right? With regard to green house gasses and human intervention of the global climate I don't really care. Our planet is greater than us all and I believe it will out-live us (unless we cheat and explore the universe). We might even have bigger problems to solve than global warming. I for one am happy to live in such an exciting era and I am grateful that it is while global warming, as opposed to global cooling. I do respect nature and do think that we should always use our brains to minimize damages to the natural environment, but with the industrial revolution and all it is probably a trade-off. :blank:

Tell me if I should think otherwise.

And yeah The Netherlands are going to be f**ked! Whooray for future generations aye?

Hahaha.. well..  Nature doesn't need or care about respect,  it has the final say..

My point is,  human and their technology is equipped to deal with these slow fluctuations..

As long as we don't run out of starch foods, (and we won't), just move the farms,  what could possibly happen..

Bees, as for the ecosystem..  There is the Current balance,  but to maintain the food cycle necessary for a Fallout situation does NOT require that the diverse ecosystem survive in its entirety.

When we talk about Survival in the fall out situation,  this excludes the dolphins..

We have time for dolphins now,  but not so in the scenario that is in the end-of-days..

The climate is changing. It changes periodically. It is a wave, like every process in this universe. Everything that goes up, eventually comes down again. If you breath in, you will breath out again. That movment contributes to evolution, because something that stands still, has nowhere to go. "Climate change" is not caused by us, we cause other much more challenging problems, but in the near future we will find a ways to deal with it, and use the change to our advantage, and eventually reach new heights we ever reached before. We always find a way. This is why the human race is so succesfull. We have dealt with worse in the past, with less technology and knowledge then we have now, and we survived it. Understand that in nature, there are no catastrophes.

We are living in a transitional period now. Not only a transition of our planet, but for society and humanity as a whole. We are going from surviving, to expressing. We are facing big challenges at the moment, transition is rarely smooth, just think back to puberty, and right now it seems that everything is going down hill. But let me ensure you, that we will find a way. We always do. Just like the first sunshine is all the more beautiful after days of rain. And the first tulip after months of snow.
