I see it as more of a spectator sport. Kinda like actual sport, in that regard, actually.

TP4 needs stronger hands, can play for hours with no issue... I will agree that it is hard to pick up, haven't had any friends actually stick with it that haven't played the original.

once went to a bar with friends as they were having a Starcraft themed night with the GSL streaming on the TVs (years back when it was more popular)

was a really cool atmosphere

I agree. It's not something I can do, but it's cool to see people who are crazy good at it.

It's interesting to watch but I've never really been interested in RTS games.  The few times I've played, I've realized they aren't for me and move on.

I used to watch so much SC2 on twitch, then it just got boring.
Though it is kind of what made me discover mechanical keyboards.

This. To learn even basic builds takes a ****load of focused practice.

Compare to a game like CSGO where most of your skills (like map knowledge, aim, etc.) get better from just playing. There is obviously focused practice in CSGO, especially the higher you go, but you can play the game and have fun without having to learn a complicated sequence of ****.

Plus there isn't as much instant gratification. The first few minutes you usually have no idea whether you're ahead or behind. In CSGO I get a little neurotransmitter reward every time I hear that ping from a frag.

it's tiring.. the learning curve isn't too high but you do need some adjustment either..

I am playing using the Grid hotkeys.. it works alrite.. but it's very cumbersome...

The repetition required to make it second nature is ridiculous. I had an idea years ago that I wanted to get good (WoL). I was going to play Terran, so all I did was practice simple macro and try and hit timings. I still have them written down: 3:45 natural, 6:50 factory, 7:30 engineering bay, 8:00 starport, 10:00 50 scv, 10:50 +1 attack, 12:00 combat shields. There wasn't any reason you couldn't hit diamond with just marine/mauauder/medivac even with poor micro at the time if you never missed timings. After a while I could do it without trouble against AI, then just as it was second nature enough to do it against humans I quit. While I was marginally successful none of it was fun. But yeah, after way too many hours of dedicated practice you never have to think about hotkeys again.

And so like many endeavors in my life, I know exactly what I need to do to be successful, I know that with sufficient focused effort I will get there, and with full recognition of what it will actually take to be good, I choose not to because the effort is overwhelming, and I just don't like it enough.
