Just received my RealForce 87U 55g...
« on: Mon, 03 April 2017, 21:04:27 »
I just received my new 87U 55g, I also have a silenced, lubed, and packed 45g HHKB.

As a Topre fanboy, I can honestly say I am not impressed with this board. Directly comparing it to my HHKB, the only positive I can pull from it is that 55g feels extremely crisp compared to 45g. Everything else feels cheap. The case flex towards the bottom is noticeable, the bottom row modifiers wobble like no other, and there is virtually no thock to this keyboard at all. It pretty much solidifies my thought of me hating stock Topre, but loving silenced and lubed Topre. It really is a totally different feel and sound, and after using this stock 87U for a day really makes it a necessity for me.

I stopped using MX boards for the exact reason that they all felt cheap and sounded awful to me, this is not much better. Feel wise, it's way better than any MX switch I have used, but the main reason why I love Topre is for that "THOCK", and this just lacks that completely.

I planned on adding this board to my collection but I honestly don't see myself buying hyperspheres for it and spending the time to lube it, so I am instead going to transplant the 55g cups to my HHKB and sell this as is with 45g/55g to get some of my money back.

Mod Edit: if you decide to sell, you need to list it properly in the Classifieds.

hhkb has case mounted switches and RF has steel plate mounted switches, which cancels out the echo and hence the thock

Yeah, this is what I pulled from it as well, but also knew this going into it. Its the main reason why I chose the HHKB first before the 87U, the THOCK is definitely more unique and deeper on the HHKB.

I'm not saying the 87U is a bad keyboard. It is definitely better than ANY MX keyboard I have used, I am just underwhelmed with its stock feel, but I have always disliked stock Topre keyboards. Its just that it feels different from what I remember when I first tried a 55g RealForce. But as stated, keyboards are 100% personal preference, I will never give up Topre because it is definitely my favorite switch, but stock Topre is just not for me.

My current plan is to fill my HHKB with 55gs, and put the 45g on everything but the Alphas on the 87U then resell.

I really wanted to like this board though but it just has too many little things that don't work for me. The feet are starting to be an issue for me, with them down the board feels way too flat, and with them up the angle is definitely too high for my liking. Size and weight don't make it a very good travel board, and I like to bring my keyboard to and from work every day. It is definitely a solid board though, and with silencing, lube, and a packed case I can definitely see this being a much better board.

Hey I saw your response to me on OCN Drazah, please send me a PM on here or OCN when you get finished with the swap. I most likely will take the RF off your hands when you are done with it. Actually gonna stash some cash away for it from this weeks pay. :thumb:

Hey whats up man! Definitely, I plan on doing the transplant sometime later this week and I will send you a message right afterward with the details. It's currently looking like there will be enough 55g domes to cover the alphas of the 87U and everything else will be 45g.

I honestly prefer 45g on my hhkb

though somewhat for me, realforce and hhkb are just so different and incomparable to each other
and I love the feel of my 55g RF

My biggest concern for the swap in how my HHKB will sound afterwards. I really hope once the 55g cups are in place, I don't loose that signature "thock". I really love the crisp feeling of the 55g, but not so much on this 87U because the Topre sound is honestly the main reason why I made the switch. Even using it in the office all day, I would say that my stock 87U in 3x louder than my modded HHKB which is near silent and just "thocks", the 87U has a lot more rattle and "clacky-ness" to it.

Sounds good to me, thanks for letting me get 1st shot at it also bud! I definitely appreciate it. No real hurry on it, I just wanted to get your attention about possibly selling it to me as early as possible since I know how well taken care of your boards are. Just send me a PM once you get the project all finished up. :thumb:
