New dyesubs with oily surface which won't come off
« on: Thu, 04 May 2017, 08:34:31 »
I  bought these NIB OG dyesubs a few months back, they have become quite oily, kind of like they are shined. I cleaned them a week back since I was putting them on anew board and I put them in a denture tabs bath, and I have rubbed them with a vinegar cleaning mix, but they are oily, I need to wash my hands when I have used it for some time. I don't remember if they were like that before I put them in the denture tabs bath, maybe they became like that because of the dentures? I'm worried because it said on the pack that it has some "active" cleansing, which might mean they put some kind of protective residue on the caps, is that possible? and if yes how do I get rid of it? and if no, how do I get rid of the oily feeling? Btw This can't be shine since caps like pause break and print screen have an equal amount of oilyness.

Have you tried rubbing them with white spirit (paint thinner) and then with a degreaser? (alcohol)
That's the recipe I use when I need to get rid of sticky glue etc. The first solvent should dissolve the oily stuff, the second should remove the first solvent.

I'll maybe try that, can I use Aceton from a pharmacy for the former, and a baby wipe for the latter?

Is washing powder also useless?

Perhaps for the second step - degreasing. It is not an oil-based solvent.
Acetone dissolves ABS. PBT plastic is usually impervious to it but I am not entirely sure that the sublimated dye is.

Listen: no cheap alcohol with ABS plastic. You can safely use isopropil alcohol.

A couple of baths in hot soapy water at weekly intervals should take care of it if it is only an initial surface-level problem.

BTW, slightly off-topic: If it had been an artisan keycap cast in two-part polyurethane resin then it could seep an oily substance if the two parts hadn't been mixed in correct proportions. There is no cure for that. I'm mentioning that only for completeness.
ABS, PBT and POM being thermoplastics shouldn't have that problem.

So the 5 cap, for example,  that cap will feel greasy ?, but the 6 feels totally clean and dry ?

it might not be oil then..  it might be a wax they used during the sublimination ?  idk much about this.. but if you've washed it with a degreaser and it's still greasy feeling..  It's probably a wax..

Rub it down with a damp paper towel

Not that much, but even my "matte" black gaterons are kinda shiny. PBT shines too, it just takes longer.

About as many times as any normal person?

An odd complex here is that the key isn't certainly oily,   just as a germaphobic person may be unsure of the presence of germs.

Asgeirtj, is physically compelled to wash his hands after using the keyboard..

The presence of DOUBT to him regarding whether or not the keycaps are TRULY oily is what set this off.  It's not something so complex that the average minded person wouldn't be able to immediately identify, but even if the circumstance of the oiliness was ambiguous, there wouldn't be this -degree- over rumination over it.

Which  is why I've come to the conclusion that there may be something unique to  -asgeirtj-  the user.
