486DX2 66MHz retro build: where to get components?
« on: Sun, 08 October 2017, 06:24:27 »
So yes... I wanna build a 486DX2 66 MHz today. Coz of... reasons. Retro gaming and win3.1 looks so haawt.

In all seriousness.. where can I source components? Especially from Europe? I tried to look up old computer markets that people went too back in the day, but those basically don't exist anymore.

If you lived in the Atlanta, Georgia area I have an original IBM 486 that I would sell very cheap.

Unfortunately, shipping to Europe would probably be $150 or possibly more.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

What are the specs and state of that machine? Yes... It is ridiculous how much shipping costs transatlantic.

it's kind of tough to use something --that retro--..

I think one of them wolfie 8400 (D0) or 8700 builds is the bare bottom for USEABLE  retro..

their single thread rating is as high as 1700 w/ full overclock..

That's very usable..

One of my x220 which I use all the time with a 2520m does 1700 single thread..

A pentium g3258 build could also be fun..  I got 4 of them, 4.6 4.7 4.7 4.8ghz.   benches 2800 single core. Very good for the starcraft.

x220 you say eh? That would be a good "value proposition". Put a new battery in there.. run light weight distro (arch) ... dosbox + some productivity software that is light weight.. just vim and tiling wm.

I would like to have a machine that is OFF the internet... just to focus on writing and thinking.

For nostalgia, I would like to have some REALLY old hardware.

But being on the internet... makes me start look at things.

When I really want to write, I still do it on paper.

There are retro gaming meetups. Try to find a local one and ask the folks there.
