Thoughts on artisan key caps.
« on: Sun, 09 July 2017, 19:19:17 »
I am not really a fan of paying $300+ for ONE piece of molded plastic.

I care about keyboard switches, layout and function.

Double shots, triple shots and APL keys are great.

I have the money to buy artisan caps but I can't justify the cost even if they are rare. Also I feel it would be annoying to press a spike textured cap.

Feel like just 3D printing my own.

What nmur said.

The vast majority of people wouldn't pay $1000+ for a watch.

But there is a group of people that can appreciate and respect the craftsmanship and effort that goes into them.

This is the group that will pay more for no functional benefit. This group also exists regarding artisans.

It's one thing when you're making 1/2 million and being frivolous.

It's another thing when you're barely cracking 50k  and throwing $300 around..    This is the middle class trap..

hahahahahaha

No one WANTS to pay that much for a piece of plastic. But there are people who like the collecting aspect of it. Also people who like the trading aspect and culture of it. If something has an "accepted" value much higher than what you would imagine, there is a good chance it will retain that value. Just like people who buy CS:GO knives or sneakers. There are millions of people who would never spend $100 on a mechanical keyboard either.

I'm a big proponent of "you do you".

I appreciate artisans and I own a few that I will be using on my new 87U keyboard builds to create a theme and color scheme for the keyboards.

I am really impressed by some of the artisan keycaps coming out these days. The way I feel, if I don't see myself using an artisan keycap on one of my keyboards for (potentially) daily use, I typically pass on the purchase. Therefore, I am not really into the artisan trading scene at the moment.

It is the same when you are stupid.
