Any Old OLD Irish people here ?
« on: Fri, 02 March 2018, 17:47:29 »
Just read that old-world irish farmers ate 8 to 14lbs of potatoes per day.

Caloric-ally it makes perfect sense, and the math checks out, to supply heavy physical labor..

Overall,   that's eating a little more than 1 large potato PER HOUR..

How did people physically manage this, what type of meal system did they have, was it only 3 meals ?

Did the article you read mention how many pints of Guinness they drank as well? I suspect 8-14 of those as well.

Hahahahahha.. no this is old-world subsistence type farming, Guinness probably existed, but not for subsistence farmers.

I doubt there are any Irish people that old around anymore :))

I'm pretty sure there were more than three meals, since even in modern Ireland some families would have 4 meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, supper).

You also have to remember that potatoes were pretty much all Irish people had to eat in those days. A quick google search tells me the average person today eats ~6.5 lbs of food a day. Given that farmers are doing manual labour all day and potatoes aren't that nutritious, it's not too difficult to imagine.

Well, I'm asking because, I've attempted myself to eat 5 lbs of potatoes in a day, and I found that quite difficult..

No harm in trying a fun experiment for yourself.. go for the 5lbs,  may not be so straight forward.. hahahahahaha

Processed potatoes aren't too nutritious but otherwise are misaligned as being bad for you. Potatoes contain a good amount of carbs and fiber, as well as vitamin C, vitamin B6, potassium and manganese. Their nutrient contents can vary depending on the type of potato and cooking method. As far as old world I would imagine this would be well before the great potato famine.

It's not like they ate 5lbs of potatoes from they day they were born, you would get used to eating more and more as you grew up.

I most definitely can't eat that many potatoes either, I don't know anyone that can. Irish people have much more balanced diets these days :))

You're right, they are healthy, but they're not that nutrient rich compared to other vegetables. My point was that you would have to eat a lot of them to get the required amount of nutrients in a day.
