Which one you prefer? Model M or Topre?
« on: Wed, 16 May 2018, 13:08:16 »
what do you think if you tried both? would you rather to use a Topre Keyboard or a Model M buckling spring? I mean for everyday use?

Thanks :)

Topre.

If it's buckling spring, it's gotta be Model F.

Entirely subjective and you need to provide more information. What are you going to use it for? I've grown up using Model Ms, but after using Topre 55g I can't go back to them. I find them too fatiguing for everyday use. Topres are easier to source brand new, and forget using buckling springs in an office.
I use a Realforce 55g at work (typing on one right now), though HHKBs are another (better?) option. I like Model Fs better than Ms, but they are a bit more difficult to find and set up to use on modern machines (unless you're counting the still-in-the-making Ellipsavers).

Comparing the two is not really worth delving into. They are unlike each other in almost every way.

That being said, topre.

how about the Topre with 45g switches? have you tried them? or do you think the 55g is much better when using a Topre?

Thanks

I haven't used a Realforce with 45g, but I've heard only positive things about HHKB (which uses 45g). I've tried the HHKB for a week and wasn't too impressed at first, but by the end of the week I didn't want to return it to the owner.

As others have said, Model M and Topre are very different experiences.  I doubt that there are very many people who would like them both equally.

Personally, I prefer switches that require lower force, and buckling-spring feels like too much work to type for long periods of time.  (I gave my Model M to my wife, and she likes it.)  There are people who love 55g Topre, but I'm a fan of Topre silenced, variable weight boards -- a light, soft touch that I can type happily on for hours without annoying anyone in the vicinity.  (Fwiw, my other current favorite board has o-ringed Cherry brown switches.)

Yes after trying the Model M I feel it really requires a good amount of force to use it, I think in long periods this could cause fingers fatigues.

This,  I mean yeah they're both keyboards and the caps are usually pbt but it's like saying a Volkswagen beetle and Ferrari are both cars that use tires.

Also Topre no question.

Model M because Topre is the most overhyped keyboard tech in the universe ;)

Seriously though I have a Realforce 87U 55g.  It's...OK.  I don't hate it or anything.  But I can't for the life of me understand why people are so obsessed with it.

But there's nothing that matches the clean, crisp snap of a buckling spring keyboard, where the tactility and actuation are always perfectly in sync because they use the same mechanism.  Well, except maybe beam spring, but let's be realistic...

Topre worth the price but not as good as some people say(I have hhkb, 35g 108, rgb) buckling spring is the best.

It's like, dude, you gotta re-evaluate
Your perspective and your priorities, because
You started doing this because it was ****ing fun, you know?
It has to be fun
Otherwise, you're just torturing yourself, you know?
You're... you're just stuck inside your own ****ing head

Topre sucks so buckling springs win by default. But to parrot everyone else in the thread, the two keyboards are nothing alike.

Topre are really quiet through, as buckling spring are loud enough to wake dead people.

I've never used Topre, but I don't understand how the Model M is fatiguing. Your fingers just build strength and endurance. After using the Model M and Box Navies as my primaries, other keys actually feel too light, and feel almost tedious to type on at times.

I've been curious to try Topre, but the price is really high for a production keyboard. If I did get one, I'd probably go for the Leopold FC980C or a fullsize beige Realforce.
Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

The world has become a weird place.

I thank the topre worth the extra money if you really need extreme high reliability but build quality wise it's even slightly inferior te cheaper leopold(mx) and the feel is just very decent but not superior. Buckling are heavier but I feel it's more comfortable then my mx green and 67g zealios as I never feel my hands become tired when using BS but I do after few hours on MX. Currently looking forward to replace my topre 108 35g with FC980C because I can't get used to JIS layout even typing Japanese.

Topre is one of the easiest switchtypes to live with.

If I could only keep one of all of my keyboards, it would be a 45g-uniform Topre.

That said, I love other switches for their characteristics just the same, but some of them have their time and place.

I think they are both a unique and great experience. It is all subjective to your needs and feel. Personally, I prefer topre.
