I wonder if this is a desperate move to get press/relevance.
Ducky had their teething problems early on in the hobby's lifetime. I can recall asking Chinese coworkers for help ordering a 1008XM from Taiwan (and discovering it was made of fail and tinfoil). But for years they've been putting out a predictably decent product with few surprises. Basically any time from 2010 onwards, you could say "just get the mainstream Ducky TKL or fullsize board" as a newbie reccomendation and not be too awfully wrong.
But I would be unsurprised to see their marketshare and mindshare slipping. They have to compete with no-name Chinese boards that will give you "Blue Switches" of some sort and the tackiest backlighting in the universe for about the price of a nice dinner out, and companies like Logitech, Corsair, and CoolerMaster who have established trust and distribution in the West.
Maybe, in that situation, the value is more in marketing than actual sales. Everyone in the hobby will be talking about Ducky for a few weeks, and probably browse other selections in their product line.
Although, if they wanted to make a splash, there are plenty of other choices. I'm surprised they didn't try to say "We're doing Box switches" -- there's a clear gap in the market for those.
