Anyone Have a Technivorm Moccamaster?
« on: Wed, 01 May 2019, 16:33:01 »

I know that drip coffee is typically looked down upon by coffee snobs, but

1) I have heard this one is really good, even among coffee snobs, and
2) Well made diner coffee is my favorite, and diners all use drip makers.

It's really expensive though, so it's not something I just want to take the plunge on. I'm mainly looking for simplicity, good extraction, and consistent taste. I usually make my coffee with a French press or Aeropress, but those are a bit of a pain to use, and they result in high variability in taste (due to high chance of human variation in timing, measuring, etc) and apparently low caffeine extraction (my homemade coffee has little effect on tiredness compared to coffee shop or diner coffee).

Anywho, does anyone have experience with one of these?
Maybe they're waiting for gasmasks and latex to get sexy again.

One wurd of caution.. How much of the Hot-Water path comes in contact with PLASTICS.

This is the first thought when Tp4 deals with any food apparatus.

It's one thing to use plastic tubs on cereal, another to have it heat cycled.

In terms of taste or health? I believe the water tank is plastic, but the carafe is glass. The heating element is copper instead of aluminum, which is supposed to be a big deal. As far as the piping that gets the heated water to the carafe, I'm not sure; it might be glass since, in the cut-away picture, it looks as though it clamps directly to the heating element.

Both.

Remember cigarettes, leaded gasoline, benzene, cholesterol, milk, animal protein

The conglomerates are the law, they tell you it's Safe-Enuff by their standards. They also own the regulation on such standards. As a sentient individual, do we want to be the first or last guy to choose a safer option.

Plastics/ Petro-chem are unnatural in our evolutionary environment. Our system can tolerate, but was not designed to deal with it long term.

Tp4 has gone all glass/ porcelain for Tea.

I have one and I really enjoy it! Def more convenient than a Chemex or Aeropress and is prob the best bang for the buck drip coffee maker. I don't get why the price is so expensive on amazon though, we have them for around 150$ here in Sweden
Very busy with studies atm.

Thanks for the feedback. I can't find it anywhere cheaper. Maybe it's just cost of importation and/or having something "made in Europe", so they know they can charge more in the US.

Yes, but I want good tasting, potent drug(s)! Those were the two problems I was trying to solve, which this expensive machine supposedly handles.

I've just made my first pot with it using Julius Meinl coffee, and it tastes pretty good. It's hotter and more flavorful than the result I usually get out of the Aeropress and not grainy like the coffee from my French Press. It's also very fast. I brewed half the carafe in 3-4 minutes.

I'll have to try it with some other coffee varieties as time goes on but my initial impression is good.
