Bought a 3x3 cube.
« on: Tue, 13 August 2019, 20:20:56 »
Does this go like keeb, where one ends up with 30+ cubes ?

Or is it gentle like art pencils, where you really only need 1 set.

That depends on how serious you want to get into speed-cubing.

Well, speed-cubing is an interesting thing.

If you'd like to try it out, you're probably good with a <$10 cube as long as it's not "Rubik's" (They're ****).

If you'll get good at it then there's enough cubes to choose from - just like mechanical switches, each has different "feel" to it. There's even the lubing aspect that we share with our hobby. What's plastic without lube huh?

On the plus side - even the most expensive "top-end" cubes cost like $60-70 so compare to keyboards it's a "cheap" hobby to get into.

Maybe somewhere around 8-10 turns per second, or around 8 seconds per solve? (Assuming 200wpm is a 5 second solve or less).

Which cube is $60.

Are there any KMACs $300+

You can get those cubes with the inside corners rounded off these days, for speed cubing.

Didn't have them back in the day.

I had a small collection, but only 'cause they kept wearing out.  Plus a 2x2x2 and a 4x4x4 and a cylinder one, and a couple of other weird shapes.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But thatís incorrect. Itís in HHKBís slogan, but when Americaís cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

tp, best time?

1m 20s using beginner method.

In the process of memorizing algorithms.

It sounds fast to anyone uninitiated.

But for reference .. 8 seconds is top tier.  5 seconds top tier + RNG ,  3.47 seconds is Super-RNG world record

1m 20s is only slightly faster than the youngest person to solve during competition, a 3yr old in 1min 39 seconds.

Tp4 = Absolute Trash lvl.. @ 1min 20s

Tp4 got that PB time in ~6 hours total learning/playtime..   A kid might not be able to do it.  But people forget Tp4 = adult

Current Tp4 average  ~2:30 (RNG included)

Just keep solving cubes and you can easily push it down under a minute. You'll be able recognize more patterns and make turns efficiently as you gain more experience.

Which solving method are you learning btw?

Right now I just know the beginner layer by layer method for a complete solve..

I've started on cfop.  practicing F2L atm.

It's been so long since I've been in practice that I've mostly forgotten the order of the top layer algorithms.

Once TP gets better, he should get one of these.

Solve by size, not by color.
