Oh cocaine has been around for a long time (quite popular in the 20's - 50's) and amphetamines but in the 80's crack cocaine became cheap and accessible.

Cocaine, morphine, and even heroin were legal and even common in the US until 1914.

Amphetamines were widely used during WW2 and regularly given to soldiers and pilots.
It was also favored by Hitler and probably contributed greatly to his mental decline towards the end.
