Occasionally this happens to me. I'll be perusing my Wishlist and see something weird I normally would never add to the list. In this case EZ-Cheese flavored dog paste. What bothers me the most is I dunno even what it replaced? Probably something really important that I added on there at some point, now lost forever to orange canned shmutz. I must've stared at that spot between the Cacodemon Piggy Bank and the box of Zagnuts for 10 minutes trying to remember what used to be there, but alas it's all canine cheese wizz now  :'(

They do this to game the system.

Ebay you rate the seller, and the item has a generic rating. Amazon you only rate the item, this allows them to send out something cheap garner a bunch of stars and ratings then swap out to something else, either legit or even fake.  Amazon is actually less safe than Amazon at this point for this very reason.

Another issue hitting Amazon is the auto-order or auto refill thing where they send you another on a regular basis. The companies offer the item for a low cost, get a bunch of people to put it on auto refill and then jack the price up. The conditioner I use tripled in price over the course of about 6 months, luckily I wasn't on the auto renew but it was a pain to keep having to look for a new supplier.

Amazon has no one to blame but themselves for this as they actively courted Chinese sellers and did nothing to discourage fakes and rigging the system. They saw what problems Ebay had with it and did nothing because frankly, they don't care, they just want the market share at all costs. They have no interest in how people market things on Amazon so long as they get their cut.

I wonder if it's to the point Amazon is so ingrained in current consumerism that it's too big to fail. I don't think there's ever been a retail store (which is essentially what Amazon is) that has become so ever-present.

Just 10 years ago it was just a book store... crazy.

It's not Amazon. It's whoever is in charge of the listing. Some sellers will hijack an item to keep the ratings and sell a completely different thing to keep the higher position. As a previous Amazon reviewer, I've seen this happen a lot in the last recent years.

Well, 20 years ago. They began selling other things as early as 1998.
