drunk driver totalled my 3 month old truck...
« on: Thu, 10 December 2020, 20:19:26 »
Well.... life is full of surprises in late august I bought a 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT ... a few nights ago a drunk driver plowed a s-class Mercedes into the truck at high speed.. (well and into several other cars as well)..

Today I have learned the due to the extent of damages to my truck it is a total (frame quite bent)..... damn truck only had 3,000 miles on it.. I only bothered to put the plates on it 2 weeks ago.   :(      sucks ..could be worse ..it could not be totaled, these dang trucks cost so much $$$ now they are hard to total..  my relative had a dodge with 5K miles that got hit that was more expensive than my silverado.. insurance would not total it so it was rebuilt (new frame) and is not worth near what it was..

I'm shopping now....I guess someone (me) is getting a new Silverado for xmas

RIP Chevy Silverado ..taken too soon

drunk drivers suck a** .... it is lucky nobody was killed... my truck was (legally) parked when struck

As long as I am not in the car at the time, I will take write-off over repair any day. Lucky, well unlucky luck I guess.

PS please stop shipping your big ass trucks to Australia.

Gotta get one of those lucky cats for the dashboard on the next truck.

You can hit up a buddhist temple for protection glyphs too.

While that would seem logical, it's actually not the case.

Modern cars are designed to absorb energy and they do that by crumpling everything around the cabin while preserving it, the vehicle sacrifices itself for the occupants. As such the percentage of write-offs has actually gone up as safety standards and prices went up, not down.

Glad you are okay.
I hope you have gap insurance, if not, insist the other company replace your truck, not just pay you off. Otherwise you will be out several grand.

The US really should implement serious enough penalties for this sort of crap to really discourage it. In Australia, penalties for midrange drink driving go up to $2000-3000 with a streamlined process for suspending licences for 3 month periods.

Drink driving and speeding used to be big problems there until the government went with heavy penalties and some really good PR campaigns based macho drivers compensating for small ****s.

It's handled at the state and even local level, there's very little federal control on it.

Some states you can still occasionally get away with an open container (depending on skin color and county) meanwhile other states don't just throw the book at you they also throw in the kitchen sink. I've seen penalties range from verbal warning to completely life wrecking depending on state or even county.

As for speeding, you've been lied to about casual speeding.

Do people in Australia even buy this crap? What if it breaks in the middle of the outback?
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

They are coming in like a disease. About 5 years ago you might see one F truck a year, Silverado has only be a recent addition to Aus. I see at least a few Silverados each week now. They don't fit anywhere, our roads/car facilities are not built for big vehicles like this.

I don't think anyone that actually goes bush use them though, that is mainly reserved for Hilux, Landcruiser, Patrol, Pajero etc. I doubt many real tracks would accommodate such a large vehicle.

I actually think people are using these things for general domestic driving or for towing horses floats etc.

I am pretty sure they are super expensive here also compared to the US. So people are overpaying for vehicles that are a **** to drive on Australian roads.

And its not like I am just *****ing about something I have never been in. I had an F350 when I worked in Dubai (not by choice).

Same in Australia- it's state by state. Probably a lot more relaxed up in the Northern Territory which is mostly empty, but punitive in the more populous states.

The big change has been that drink driving has become much less socially acceptable than it used to be. Or perhaps I am just older now, and people tend to stop drink driving with age.

the thing is, properly drunk peoples never think they are and so are the most dangerous... kinda why i will not get into my car even if i only had one beer (never get more than 2 anyhow), i wait an hour or 2 before going home so i am pretty sure most of the alcohol is gone (then again never more than 2 beers and beer is the only alcoholic beverage that i like), i think peoples should adhere to a strict standard like that, and it will reduce speed related death too :) (almost no speed related death are only speed related, almost always alcohol, lack of maintenance or sheer stupidity are also to blame)

There is no excuse to driving drunk now, too many options to get transportation at a reasonable price to prevent it now (Uber, Lyft, Taxi's, and public transportation).  Sucks they took out your truck but at least you weren't in it when it happened.

Driving is terrifying I don't know how people do it everyday with the knowledge there are some real idiots out there. Constantly putting your life in the trust that every stranger in your town is safe.

Be thankful this isn't Vietnam or India where traffic laws are nonexistent and your license test consists of driving 600ft in a straight line.

Thank you, your assistance is much appreciated.

The Silverados we get are converted to right hand. But I think they are imported and then converted locally which may be the reason for the high cost to purchase.

We get the Dodge Ram also, which I believe is the same deal.

I don't think there is a scheme to allow for new vehicle registration in left hand configuration. This is especially the case for a new car dealer/reseller.

I want Ford to sell the Bronco here, but I don't think it is happening. Which is like the one car that I actually like from the US.

That is a big misgnomer people have about US vehicles. Many think pickups are cheaper due to them being working class vehicles but they are very expensive compared to standard economy cars. $50-100k is not beyond reason with options and everything for a pickup. At that point I'd just get a Land Rover but whatever.

I don't think people think they are cheaper then your normal sedans etc. But it is generally cheaper to buy a new truck in the USA then they are in export markets (which makes sense because they are native to the USDM). I bet there is a massive market of second hand trucks also that are priced relatively cheap and enable normal people to pick one up also.

For example. I have just as best I can matched a 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 4wd on the USA website to a 2020 version advertised new in Australia.

USA = USD 56490 (AUD 74980) - This was full price too, not the discounted price they were offering me on the website.
Aus = USD 100194 (AUD 132 990)

For comparison in Australia, a Toyota Hilux SR5 4x4 duel cab is....

USD 48541 (AUD 64430)

So for the cost of a brand new megaloden truck in USA I can get a mid range baby pick up in Aus.

People sleep on importing used vehicles, it can really save you a ton of money and get you much better deals on certain vehicle types that are more prevalent in other countries. Plus the added bonus of having something less common you can probably sell for more than you paid for import fees shipping insurance and actual car in all.

Driving in most of the U.S. isn't that bad, except Missouri.
It may not be India but it's pretty darn close to Los Santos in GTA.

More Silverado was a pretty good deal (in that it met my requirements perfectly).. it has a sticker msrp of ~$44K USD and after incentives and negotiating the sale price was under $40K by a fair bit..    I also had equity in my old truck of about $6K ...

All in all for a fairly well equipped LT it was a pretty solid deal...  I'm bummed about having to deal with trying to replace it now..

but the prices go up quick if you start getting 4x4 ..etc packages on these things.. most of the trucks I looked at the other day were $low 40s to $60K on the chevy lot at least .... now if you get the GMC or go get a fancier ford or dodge you can easily but near $100K on a truck here.

My dad totalled his car recently (he's on a course of chemo and fell asleep, miraculously emerged unscathed) and the advice I was told was to tell the insurer you "feel unsafe" in the car. I mean they're meant to return the car to the state it was in before the accident and that's very subjective.

I'd heard that the US was very tough on drink drivers or at least that it was very costly to get your license back. If he's driving an S-Class that's admittedly probably not a huge disincentive. Drink driving was pretty rife in Ireland up to 15 years ago and then they started enforcing driving 5 year driving bans for anybody over 0.05% alcohol level and everybody mostly stopped. The cops have some discretion about it so if you're not waaay over they can leave it go and you can get your license back after a year if it's a one off and you jump through some hoops.

I'm all for AI cars tbh. I've never crashed my car but I've had enough near misses due to inattention or tiredness that I didn't even begin to see beforehand that I'd be really glad of some assistance. Even if they tracked other cars on the road and killed the accelerator if you were about to pull out in front of something in your blind spot that'd be a gigantic improvement. The safety systems are so bloody primitive.

Apparently AI-assisted safety protocols alone, (non self-driving) can reduce accidents by 700%

It's obvious it would but it's like people being afraid of flying. They don't want to cede control. I know a couple of people have crashed their car on their way to the airport I don't know anybody who has been in a plane crash.

Plus I want to go party in a city 8 hours away, and wake up at home. It'd be glorious. Watch a movie on the way to work. It'd be the other half of the remote work dynamic freeing people to go live wherever instead of congregating in cities where property prices are obscene.

We need dedicated self driving lanes. The tech still has issues detecting objects, especially moving ones while moving at high speeds i.e. peds and other cars. It would be able to signal to other sdv's and keep an appropriate and safe distance accordingly, not so much in a mixed road of humans and sdv's. City navigation is far better, impressively so that I'd have faith in the tech being able to nimbly perform obstacle courses at lower speeds. But the highway is where people get killed.

Were you insured for agreed value or market value? I don't know how your insurance works over there hopefully you get enough paid out to replace the truck without being out of pocket.

I always go with agreed value so that if my car gets ****ed, I can replace my dash cam and sound system also. I got a new car about a year ago, with a decent discount. The depreciation has only just caught up with what I paid. Already getting the new car itch but that is because the car I wanted at the time has like a 12 month waiting list.

It's often called gap insurance in the U.S., some include it free, others charge extra for it.

Ah yeah that makes sense, we have gap cover for various things here sounds like the same principle.

Bad luck dude, but sh*t happens, you must be ready for any kind of situations. And to be honest, I do not really think that it is really big problem. You can fix that easily. And, dude I am sorry, but in case you consider these trucks "expensive" ... well why would you buy them?! I do not actually think that they are so "expensive", if you looking for an expensive truck, go get the mercedes x-class, that thing is really expensive. I am actually working for a car shipping company, and I am driving a dodge ram 3500. Our company is looking to get a Driver Recruiting Software in order to recruit new driver, who would be great professionals in this!

I wonder what it is with new users bumping this topic to say the same thing. There was a very similar comment posted by a new user about a week prior to the above that was removed, I assume for being a spam account?

well that's  the only true way to eliminate accidents, but giving up the freedom to drive is asking too much

Same thing happens in the What VPN do you use thread, and yes it's spam bots since that is the account's only post.
On the subject, congrats on the new truck and glad it could be dealt with  :thumb:

Lock them, that will shut down those bots, neither thread serves much purpose at this point.
