INTEREST CHECK FOR GMK MERCURY

A set inspired by the element Mercury

INTEREST FORM
If you have some time, and are interested in this set
I would appreciate if you could fill out this interest check form!

I. MERCURY EXPLAINED

More
Mercury is an element with the symbol Hg on the periodic table. Mercury is commonly known as quicksilver and the reason why the symbol is Hg is because it was once called hydrargyrum. Mercury is the only known metallic element to be in a liquid state at standard atmospheric conditions. Mercury occurs naturally throughout the world mostly as cinnabar (mercury sulfide). Vermilion is a pigment created from grinding natural cinnabar or synthetic mercury sulfide.

Mercury is commonly known to be used in thermometers and barometers. These devices are used to tell differences in the atmosphere, and are used by weather forecasters and scientists alike. Mercury is also used in amalgam (mercury and metal alloy) in dental restoration.

Poisoning due to Mercury is a result from exposure to water-soluble forms such as mercury chloride or methylmercury, through inhalation of the vapors or ingestion.

Mercury is one of my favorite elements and is the inspiration for this set!

II. COLORS

  • PANTONE 428C (GREY)
  • GMK WS2 (WHITE)
  • GMK N9 (DARK GREY)
For the colors I wanted to go with something that reflects mercury due to its silvery shiny nature.
I also may change the accents depending to either red (to represent cinnabar) or a different white/grey.
I chose to go with a bluish grey for the alphas and darker greys for the mods.

OTHER POSSIBLE ACCENT COLORS

III. KITS

Compatibility for full size, 1800, TKL, 75%, 65%, and 60%
3 keys for 40%, an extra "B" for Alice layouts and support for F13 boards.

Spacebar kit includes support for Alice layouts and
accents and a 6u centered stem for HHKB.

R1 Periodic Symbol | Biohazard Symbol | Skull & Crossbones
R2 Flask | Rhombohedron/Altimeter
R3 Flask | Alchemical Symbol | Thermometer Scale
R4 Periodic Symbol | Rhombohedron

***All novelties should be to GMK standards (0.38 fine line width)
however they may have me change them during quoting so no grantees that these will be final.***

Novelties Explained

More
Periodic Symbol : This is the symbol that can be found on the periodic table that represents the element Mercury, its molar mass, and atomic mass.
Conical / Erlenmeyer  Flask : A common flask used in chemistry for experiments that can be used to heat or boil liquids, it is also used in titration.
Rhombohedron : This is the symbol used to represent the crystal structure of the element Mercury.
Altimeter : Although modern altimeters use what is known as an aneroid, Mercury was used in the basis and invention of barometers to sense pressure changes in the environment.
At higher altitude pressure decreases, and thus a change in the environment causes the aneroid to sense the altitude.
Alchemical Symbol : This was the symbol used to represent Hydrargyrum (Mercury) in alchemy. It is also the astrological symbol for the planet Mercury.
Thermometer Scale : Mercury is used in thermometers, however thermometers that contain a red liquid is alcohol to which red coloring has been added.

Let me know which kit's you're most interested in the IC form!

I will probably end up adding a comparisons chart in the future. Also the accent color is up for debate; I was thinking red due to cinnabar (vermillion) a red pigment created from mercury, or a slightly darker bluish grey.

I like the color, about the accent choice, it's better to show 3 base kits with 3 accents for visualization and better judgement. Also, can you consider novelties for iso enter?

If you need to consider a comparison chart, that should tell you enough already.

For those who think this is Apollo R2, pull them up side-by-side and refresh the memory... they are pretty far off, only thing really in common is being gray / monochrome. I was thinking the same at first :D

Anyway, clean novelty kit!

You’re right. This is much closer to GMK Modern Dolch, or GMK Rainy Day, with GMK ASCII and GMK Lunar finishing not too far behind.

I think that’s part of the problem here - the set lacks character. It’s two tone with an accent that doesn’t help distinguish. What’s worse is that the two colors are very commonly used - N9 mods are prevalent, and we’ve had tons of 2B sets (close to 428C) in recent years.

GMK apollo r2

Edit: for comparisons please add Apollo, Ashes and Rainy day.

Will do, some people have said those sets are similar, so I definitely will add those. It is monochrome so there are many sets out there that are akin to the colors.

Also consider adding the following sets: GMK ASCII, GMK Dolch, GMK Lunar. Iíd suggest GMK Modern Dolch too but the colors arenít publicly available.

Yes I tried to match as close as possible, especially for the color codes at the top, and also added a disclaimer to the renders. I'd say they're not too far off from the actual pantones, at least from my monitors ofc not calibrated but to the closest representation I can provide.

You may want to add a field for email in the interest check form, for those of us who aren't regular visitors to the forum and might miss a group buy.

Edit: I'm seeing what appears to a minor spacing issue with the first 7 elements on row 5 of the table on the deskmats. The boxes appear shifted up a small amount.

Novelties Update -
changed the skull & bones to toxic hazard symbols, as well as added an alpha Hg key and ISO enter
Reasoning for changing skull & bones novelty: (Cultural reasons)
I would like to keep them or at least have one but I am not sure at the moment concerning these cultural reasons
I will have to do more research on the topic before finalizing the icons.

You can look at GMK Boneyard, Skull and Bones are fine. Can we have skull&bones back at R4 to replace the duplicated periodic Hg since it's already in R1?

Oh is it possible to remove like one/ both of the icon thingy on the bottom left and right (especially the right) on the deskmat ? It looks a bit too claustrophobic atm, and having a bit of empty negative space is good! And for the novities, I think most of them are a tad too big, besides the Hg ones.

For the deskmat I chose to go all in and fill the space instead of having empty space, I didnít want it to be half empty half full, I gues if that makes sense, I also did like the space right next to the focus element because it gives a good space to have cables/macropads that wouldnít be obstructed by the design, but I do understand where youíre coming from because at first I also wanted to leave it relatively empty. This far it seems like the desk mats are generally liked. I may however make a more minimalist one if thatís something youíre interested in.

For the novelties, I will bring them in a bit but I will have to make sure everything is to GMK standard, but thanks for letting me know!

Seems like red is really popular (just as popular as the white) therefore I will most likely add red accents to base or to an accent kit with both accents depending on what people would be interested to see!

Thanks! I don't think there will be enough interest to warrant a red accent, but thank you for your vote I appreciate it!

I would also lean to the red alternative, but IMO it is because the white accent is too close in colour to the alphas, and is not immediately visually distinguishable at first glance. In the renders it doesn't look nearly bright enough to be WS2 to me.

Agreed. I also would like to see the red alternative as accent color.

I have some suggestions about the novs:
_ R1: Great
_ R2: I think a mod color novelty for Tab key is enough, I rarely or never see anyone using an accent novelty for it.
_ R3: The alpha color novelty "Hg" seems redundant, I wonder where it will fit in popular layouts. Also, this key is repeated from R1 so I think it's better removed. The chemistry bottle also is repeated.
_ R4: The 2 R4 1u mod "Hg" key are also repeated, please consider moving the chemistry bottle from R2 and R3 to R4 to replace these 2 "Hg", then turn 2 nav columns to 1 nav column. The 1.25u mod Skull&Bones are also repeated from R1, in this case I suggest replacing these 2 with the 1.25u version of the 1.5u key on the right (you'll have a pair of 1.25u and a pair of 1.5u with the same figure)
