This is pretty daunting for TV shoppers.

In entry lvl LCDs which are advertised as Quantum dot, they have used different arrangements of 1 to 2 dots of the 3 NOT being QD.

For example, Tcl's new qm6k, it doesn't have a QD red, it's KSF red.

Kind of a big deal. Notice the drop in color purity in the second image.

My PSU burned out last night, apparently. Tower PC won't power on today, hopefully it didn't fry anything else.
It's an excuse to upgrade my PSU and case I suppose. More **** I need, but cannot really afford at the moment

Well, shiver me daisies. My ***** is fried.
PSU did something uncalled for and burnt out the mobo on my main rig in some sick suicide pact. I seriously cannot afford an  all-new PC now, so I may as damn well get a new mobo, alongside a psu (maybe some other sweet **** too). CPU, GPU, RAM all seem fine (at least they are recognized working in a system that cannot run them)
Man life is relentless. I thought I had myself a workhorse. Been good to me for 13 years, yessir.
but SHE CAN BE REBUILT... STRONGER, AND (ever-so) slightly FASTER THAN BEFORE!

Loving the depth of discussion in this thread—so many solid takes on GPUs and cooling setups. Always cool to see how others are optimizing their rigs for max performance. After tweaking my build, I like to relax with a few rounds of wordle unlim—nothing like some brain-teasing fun after dealing with cable management chaos!

If you're hardline-ing on Ivy,  delid the chip, then you can push 4.8ghz easily. Get 2x8gb 2400mhz ram because ivy can support it.

Get liquid metal for between the die and IHS. Regular paste between the ihs and heatsink

You don't need a new heatsink, you can get away with a cheap single tower after delid it will be fine.

Tune fan curve with "Fan Control" app, great app.



Ivy is good for everything outside of pr0-g4m3r 600fps, and the modern games that are really badly designed that chews up cpu, helldivers, halo infinite.

But without 4.8ghz, it's going to struggle, both on memory bandwidth and raw ipc.



Tp4 WOULD HESITATE to rescue an IVY, because with all the parts involved, You can buy, as difficult and unattractive a proposition, an AM4 build.  Used 5700x can go for decent cheap.


Of course TP4 is highly AGAINST AM4,  You should spend $1500 to get an AM5, amd 7700 (nonx, refurb cpu, $160)+9070xt build.

And the rebuild has begun. My goal is to have my tower at least running by the middle of next week. I'm still waiting on my new PSU to arrive in the post, but I've scrounged up a few local deal parts for fantastic prices.
Here's my current system:

EVGA RTX 2070 SUPER FTW3 Ultra --> RTX 3080 (mobo can run 4k series but the cpu bottleneck wouldn't be worth it)
i7 3770K oc'd 4.2GHz --> Same
P8P67 REV 3.1 - Rev.09.B3 --> ASUS SABERTOOTH Z77 (improved socket, comparability, and all-around bus speeds)
32 GB DDR3 @ 1067MHz --> trying to find 32Gb 2133/2400 sticks for cheap
650w PSU --> 850W
and finally, a new case. The Fractal Define 7 is top of my list, but expensive. Plan on keeping the case and GPU for my next build anyway. Anyone have a full-tower ATX they would sell for cheap??

This will build will be the theoretical limit of what Ivy Bridge is capable of, and I wanna complete the build just for the sake of that. Not because I should, but because I can.

I got a used Sabertooth mobo for $60, and Noctua D15S BRAND NEW for $70 already with the PSU on the way

There are no 32gb 2400 sticks. There's only 2x8gb 2400. the 3770 wouldn't be able to run 4 sticks at remotely close to 2400mhz. probably 1866 tops.

The 3770k oc at 4.2 is too low.

If you don't want to delid, you can actually just Copy a conservative voltage setting for 4.8ghz from the internet for an Asus board of that generation.

Just don't test it in Load, just play games, it shouldn't go over temp.   You just can't fully test stability without delid, but it doesn't really matter since it won't hit that in normal games, and you don't really care about absolute stability for games anyway.


In anycase,  This is not a great way to spend money.


Because for that amount, you're already more than half way into a brand new AM5 system.

Absolute cheapest am5, $80 mobo, $150cpu, $50 ram,   And this will run around 4x-6x what 3770k would do @ 4.8ghz.

The z77 socket does enable the 3770k to run up to 2400mhz, and they do exist in 32gb 4x8Gb packs, and the z77 is the only socket that allows the cpu to do that. Even then, I think I'll need to get some specific bios drivers.

Like I said, this is mainly for fun to build the ultimate 3770k build that pushes everything into bottlenecking.
The price difference between doing this fun lil project and doing a total new build is like $600-700 vs $2000-2400
and I plan on upcycling the GPU, PSU, and case to my future build which will almost certinally be a Nova Lake build in about 2 years time.

Guaranteed you won't be able to run 4x8gb sticks at 2400mhz.  it will run 1866 tops, with relaxed timings, and for that you'd have to push the IMC voltage pretty high, and you lose FPS, on an already lower IPC Cpu.  2400mhz will top out at 2 sticks.

Tp4 is not judging how NT may be justifying this,  but it is resolutely against economic sense.

AM5 is faster, and "Not expensive," if you go the the low power route.

And since enough of the old stuff was already broken, the Performance to Power ratio high lean towards AM5.

It's not $600-700 if you don't upgrade the GPU.

$80 am5 mobo, $150 7700 used, $50 5600mhz ddr5 ram, cheap $20 thermalright cooler, more than adequate + $50 power supply,

It's only 80+150+50+20+50, $350 for an entry lvl am5.   4x the performance minimum (cpu bound scenarios).

If you want the GPU 9070xt or 5070ti, add $730 to $830. You're only at $1080 to $1180



If you MUST HAVE NOSTALGIA,  well, it is what it is. Tp4 not judging. Just being clear about the numbers.

The 3770k maxed out at 4.8ghz is about 70% of a 2700x on this graph. Or, 40% of a 9800x3d.

Whereas for roughly the same cost, a 7700 used cpu will be 92-95% w/PBO boost as fast as a 9800x3d at 1440p

"Retro nostalgia". That's fine. But the math is as stated.
