I have confirmed with signature that there is only one choice of font (italic/futura is a no-go), but there are options for size and location. Since we did big, centered, retro style last time, I plan to go for a more modern placement this time - that is, smaller and in the upper left corner of the key. So the font size and placement would be similar to Filco, but it wouldn't be the fancy italic font.

yes please, that would be great

OK, I've confirmed what I thought re: thickness:
Quote from: Melissa at Signature
There is no way besides building new tooling to increase the thickness of the keycaps. Other families of our keycaps, specifically the SA, have
thicker side wall.

So we could go with a different family, but it would be less of a match with what people are familiar with. You can look at the keycap families to get an idea of what we're talking about here. The closest match for something like a Filco is the DCS family, which has a cylindrical top. It is a bit lower-profile than stock Filco keycaps. The SA family has thicker side-walls, but has a spherical top and a higher profile, which is a more retro look and might not be as nice a match. Both are available with Cherry MX keystems, in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Ripster - you've got some of those novelty keycaps, can you post some comparison pictures?
You can call me... Keyboard Otaku... or not quite...

And the following have such a style:

Imagine Otaku with all keycaps with the same symbol. Anyway, just some ideas.

I'd only use a keyboard with those symbols that if I were typing in Wingdings.

Fentek outsources their double shot keys to Signature Plastics. Unless they use the exact same molds and the exact same machines, there is no doubt about this. You would get identical keys with a slower work around time.

Cherry double shot keys are dead and no longer in production.

Really have to say I am digging either of these quite a bit. Perhaps do the black but have very dark grays for some of the function keys (like for the blue keys exampled above) while keeping the Green font?

Regardless, I am much more excited about this whole thing now.

Love all of those. Personally out of the three I would prefer the blue font because blue goes with most peripherals (unfortunately, as I think red, yellow and green look way cooler combined with black ;) ).
Anyway it looks slick. In general the HHKB/Topre keys are a good base. They look awesome in general, even with the simple black on dark grey.

Since I need a German layout though, I think I would prefer blank blacks (unless I could get a full set like the ones bakageta photoshopped) to replace the stocks and a hand full of say orange blanks to put in the ESDF cluster.

I also give my vote for awesome face over trollface. Both are cool but I do prefer positive stuff that makes me happy when I see it ;)

One more thing I would like to suggest: Deck Font keys or something similarly awesome.

just luuuuuv it :D

/Edit

The orange on black from dizzyone is also awesome. Would fit the geekhack theme as well, that's gotta be worth something.

I always thought Deck had the worst looking keycaps in history, but thats probably just me. For me it looks like they went to some free font shop and took the first they saw.

I like both of the above grey on black and multi-toned blue combinations.  Some of the other setups look great too, like the brighter colors on black keys, but I have a feeling these will look a lot different IRL than in the photos.  Also these are more neutral and will probably get more orders.  I would try to keep in mind that the key caps from Signature look a lot different than the Filco keys in the photos, though.

Could you do a mockup of the grey on black one with the white/red on the arrow keys instead of WASD?  On my Dolche set I tried the orange WASD keys in place of the arrow keys and thought the color combo (with orange Esc) looked pretty cool.

Are those blue tones actually available from Signature Plastics?

...that the photoshopped images in this thread are based on are the DCS caps too? They look to be the most modern squarish caps that SP do though I'm having a little difficulty imagining what their cap types look like from their pdf's.

On a side note there's been a lot of mention of blank black keycaps. They're available in the UK for ISO keyboards, are they not available for ANSI keyboards ATM? If not is there really any value in getting a custom set made when it's surely only a matter of time before EK or someone gets more?
