Keyboard pros--- need suggestions...
« on: Tue, 29 November 2011, 11:35:06 »
Ok, first of all I live in India.
And I type moderately fast (110wpm-120wpm average on typeracer).
Now, I am a complete novice when it comes to keyboards ( I have only used a couple of cheap ones in my life and I type mostly on my laptop).
But now I am looking to buy a new one.
So I want to know: what the best keyboard available in India for typing is?. Having looked almost everywhere in vain for one definite answer, I decided to ask the question here, THE definite hangout for keyboard pros.

I'm not interested in any one type of keyboard in particular since I don't know how I will adjust to it (like I said, I'm practically a keyboard novice.) But I've read there's a positive correlation between fast typing and mechanical keyboards. But after searching through the internet I got to know that the only mechanical keyboard available in this region is the TVS Gold. But from reviews I've read here..... I've come to know that the design is really flaky.
This got me looking to other options such as: Ergonomic models.... like Microsoft Natural 4000  and Logitech Wave for example. Since I'm a heavy duty typist, it won't be a really bad choice as ergonomic designs are meant to help in typing for hours and hours without stop. But I'm not really sure how much they will help in typing fast.
Also other hot selling Indian keyboards like Razer lacosa etc. that I've heard of being suggested on some Indian forums seem to be laughed at elsewhere.
These are just some of the highlights of what I've read being suggested...nothing that really answers me.

So I'm pretty confused right now on what to buy... I just want something that will help me typing fast and type lots...:)
Any suggestions for me?

For typing, mechanical keyboards with blue or brown switches are excellent. Much better than Razer Lycosa or Arctosa or Logitech craps.

Ergonomic model change your wrist angle, but do not change the typing feel.

TVS gold is not good compared to Filco and Topre luxuries here, but I think that it is still the best keyboard you can have in local India.

If you can order from China, which is quite near you, then there are lots of excellent Filco, Ducky, Noppoo, PLU, KBC Poker and Topre keyboards available.
Keyboard: Filco MJ1 104 brown, Filco MJ2 87 brown, Compaq MX11800, Noppoo Choc Brown/Blue/Red, IBM Model M 1996, CMStorm Quickfire Rapid Black
Layout: Colemak experience, speed of 67wpm

I think he was more referring to the fact that postage wouldn't be too pricey from China > India. :)

Actually guys, what I was trying to ask is: which keyboard can be considered best among the low-status [as it is perceived here] non mechanical keyboards available in my country... thanks.

I like the Apple Aluminum.

Reminds me, I need to to do a review.

I better do it in my subforum.  That other dude got banned for extolling the virtues of a rubber dome in the main forum.

Sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone. I just thought, that in this place where people know so much about keyboards, someone could suggest me which keyboard among the non-mechanical ones I could use. There's different keyboard companies like microsoft and logitech etc. who make good keyboard albeit not mechanical ones.  And bear in mind, that I too would have preferred mechanical keyboards over these, but since there's an unavailability of mechanical keyboards in my country (at least any good one), I have to look elsewhere.

geekhack is not a "mechanical" keyboard-only site.  We discuss all computer input devices.

Yes, high quality keyboards are the preference for the majority of members here.  But we should not dismiss a member because he is asking about lower cost/quality items.

Damn, that's quite a thread resurrection.

These days the best board for value is the Quickfire Rapid.
Not sure if Newegg ships to India though.

EDIT: If mechanicals aren't your thing however, the Microsoft Ergo 4000 seems to be praised by the more mainstream consumers.

I'll check it out, thanks.
I'm eager to hear more suggestions.
And any quick stop options (without the need to order from different countries).

By the way, I'm not eager to get the Microsoft Natural Ergo 4000 anymore, since I decided that I won't be using an ergonomic layout. Morever I want a silent keyboard.

If you want a "silent" keyboard that narrows the field quite a bit.

90%+ of the people in this forum like mechanical keyboards, and mechanicals, well, they produce mechanical sounds.

You may have to use a few keyboards before you find your "true love" so buy something like the TVS, since it is cheap and handy, to get started.

Then, later, after you settle on your favorite internals, spend more to get the high-quality "permanent" board.

To provide for calling forth the Militia  to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions;

Not to everyone's taste, but I find the goldtouch (it's ergonomic) quite pleasant to type on and very, very quiet.  Good luck with the hunt!

Why don't you like browns? I've seen a lot of reviews raving about them, calling them a good compromise between click and linear.
