CM Storm vs Das
« on: Sun, 19 August 2012, 13:11:31 »
Hi,

I'm in the market for a mechanical keyboard and I'm hoping you guys here at GH can help me out.

I've used a $5 keyboard for the past x years, so it'll be my first time with a mechanical.

Should I opt for the CM Storm for $64 or the Das for $90?

I'm just wondering if it's worth the extra $26 for the Das; I love typing and playing RTS-style games (i.e SC2, LoL).

Thanks!

Which CM Storm? Do you need the numberpad?

If you don't need the numberpad go CM Storm. Build quality is similar and if you're new to mechanical keyboards you won't notice the slight difference in feel.

Das. CM makes good quality products and I expect their keyboard is exceptional for its price, but it's an eyesore and you're likely going to live with this investment for a long time.

If you're like me and prefer tenkeyless boards for their ergonomic layout, I'd point you toward Leopold keyboards on elitekeyboards.com . They're a tad more expensive, but they look nice and you know you've gotten your money's worth once you open up the box and grab it in your hands.

Some people (Like me) don't mind the branding on the CMstorm QFR, which is the keyboard I'd recommend.

I went with the DAS because I do a lot of excel work in my profession, and using the numkey pad on the side is helpful for inputting calculations quickly.

Go with the CM Storm... And, when you decide to get some new caps for it, get yourself some thick PBT. You won't regret it!

IMO, the worst thing about the "look" of this board is the key caps. The text on the spacebar is obnoxious and the F-keys are too busy.. But after you swap out the keys it's a non-issue. There are a few logos on the case that some people don't like, but they don't bother me.. The color of the case is nice and goes well with most key caps. =)

You really can't go wrong... Lay some pics on us when you get the chance. ;)

Yea, chances are the stock keycaps aren't going to stay on your Rapid for very long, especially if you stay on this board for a while.

They're both great boards, I've owned both. However, if you don't care about the numpad, I'd go w/ the CM QuickFire Rapid. The way I look at it is that you'll probably change out the keycaps out anyway so don't worry too much about the branding b/c a lot of that will go away once you change out the keycaps. I wish I could do w/out the numpad but I've got full decks only now.

I vote for the QF Rapid.  It can't be beat at that price, and the quality is great.  No glossy surface either.

That glossy surface is terrible. the bezel visually pops out due to the shine, while with the black keys, give you a "hole" sinking look. Where the patch of main block and number block look like 2 holes sinking into the table.
