First mechanical keyboard
« on: Tue, 16 October 2012, 20:59:54 »
Hi, I'm looking to buy my first mechanical keyboard. My desire to buy one was sparked by the realization that my membrane keyboard might actually be causing my wrist pain.

I'll be using the keyboard for about 80% typing and 20% gaming. From what I've read, Cherry brown switches should meet my needs.

This keyboard, the CM Storm QuickFire Rapid SGK-4000-GKCM1-US, is within my budget. Is it a decent choice?

Yes, that's a good keyboard. buy it on Amazon. it's way cheaper there.

This particular model with cherry mx blue is often on sale for as low as $50, if you can wait, check slickdeals.net from time to time.

Go for the Quickfire Rapid, it's the cheapest with great quality mechanical board available in the market. There's like an entire fanclub of it here on Geekhack, lol.

Thanks for the advice, it looks like this particular model is more expensive on Amazon at the moment. Is there anywhere else I should look?

I'm interested in TKL because I like to line up the 'B' key with the center of my body. I also really like the sound of Cherry brown switches.

Just tried it, it expired on the 6th. Darn, that would have been a great price. Newegg it is, I can't wait.  ^-^

Welcome to Geekhack!

Good posture when typing suggests that you should have your wrists straight.  Be aware that most mechaniecal keyboards, including the QFR, have a fairly high front (distance from the table to the top of the space bar).  You might consider a wrist rest too.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I just bought the QuickFire Pro. Brown switches are really nice and the keyboard is extremely solid. Its well worth the $70 (currently on newegg).

Yeah, I went ahead and got that one. $69.99 shipped vs. $87.55 shipped for the Rapid just seems like too good a deal to pass up.
