Michelle Phan uses CM Storm QuickFire Pro
« on: Sat, 26 January 2013, 00:19:10 »
lol my girlfriend just told me today that Michelle Phan uses CM Storm keyboard, so I went and took a look and indeed she uses CM Storm QuickFire Pro and Logitech G700.  Didn't think she's so geeky on her computer gear.

Anyway here's the video:

This reminds me Freddie Wong uses Razer Blackwidow Ultimate:

LOL sorry I know this might seem kind of a girlie topic but hey I guess there are girls on this forum right  :P

At first I was surprised but then, after browsing through her video list, I realized all she does on Youtube is upload makeup advice.  Who knows what other kind of hobbies and interests she might have.

Uh I doubt it I think her boyfriend is a male model from what I heard.  So he's probably busy doing Blue Steel or Magnum.

Though I'm surprised so many don't know about her.  She's one of the more popular "YouTube Celebrities".  I guess the age group on geekhack is probably way past those stuff  :P

I mean seriously.. holy crap.. why is this at all even noteworthy? Some woman who makes videos on a site any person in the world can upload to uses a specific keyboard. That's nice. Richard Simmons sells how many millions of DVDs - where's the thread for whatever keyboard he uses? Does anyone even care what Fatal1ty uses these days? (Other than as a way of identifying garbage from Creative.)

Michael Jordan types on a Dell QuietKey rubber dome. Going to go out and buy one of those now?

Seriously, if guys would get over the idea of women actually being on the internet and actually capable at playing games, building a computer etc... You might realize there is an awful lot of us here, it's just that many hide the fact that they are female for this very reason.

Seriously, women are half the population, we don't all sit around in sewing circles all day.

Well.... I mean, there's a reason we use "celebrities" as benchmarks.. because we consider them experts in their selected field...

I don't think "keyboard" has much to do with what M. Phan's specialty, but, i don't think anyone else believes that either, or is attempting to "shut something down"...

What's there to shut down.

I sense that you may be jealous at the fact that she's famous for promoting a somewhat vacuous industry. ;D

What M.phan does everyday is not easy, and she's quite note-worthily "good" at it.

Many people don't like the cosmetic industry, but it's a key driving force to keep contempt at bay for most women.

Cosmetics allows them to "externalize" and challenge the fact that they "may not" have been born the prettiest.. But gain back through "some-work and expense" what was denied them at birth.

This is very straight forward..

It's the Same thing when Men studies and works really hard to earn money and buy a pretty wife.

Women work and improve their appearance to land a richer husband, thus providing better opportunities for their offspring...

Men and women play different roles in society..... Though today you have the choice to break from tradition, it doesn't mean that is the most optimal decision.

WHICH is why general social commentary is "against" male and females crossing the boundaries...

..... this is the root  of the "nerd rage" you've commonly witnessed

It's not crossing boundaries or breaking tradition if you were always there and just not allowed to show yourself, men and women have been doing the same jobs since life began. Are you saying single men don't cook, clean or do laundry?

As for what she does, who she is or how hard she works...   It may be noteworthy to some extent because a Youtube celeb using one (guy or gal), but as for it being a woman, we have at least 3 active and obvious ones here using mechanical keyboards. Famous people are just normal people, some are geeks, some are jocks, some are even (amazingly enough) both women and geeks...

My point was that there would be more who would reveal that they are women if you didn't get comments like "She was probably at her boyfriends place using his computer when filming and he's probably a gamer". It's comments like these that keep many of us hidden, not tradition. Make them feel welcomed instead of like a freak and they just might actually show themselves. Unless of course you like sausage fests.

I don't think most internet nerds consider "online-women" freaks.

More like, they're so desperate for female attention, that they can't help but go into an awkward trance and spew forward the misogyny that plagues them from AFK female frustrations.

And since females fulfill the "BULK" of the reproductive role, it is quite natural that male responses towards them ALWAYS fall in some ways "Objectively". whereby the sexuality makes for less than pleasant conversations...

Some women it seems want to be treated like male "buddies", but that can never happen, because of nature.

I thought it was noteworthy based on the fact this came out of left field.  I thought it was random that this makeup expert  person would also be a keyboard enthusiast.  And yes, if you told me Richard Simmons used some specific brand of mechanical keyboard I would also be surprised.  It has nothing to do with celebrity me but since both are highly visible people you kind of get a sense of their character or at least the character they want you to see.

No one here was idolizing her and saying "I'm going to get that keyboard now!"  In fact most of us, including me, didn't even know who she was.

Other than being a Y list celebrity, why does it matter?

I don't know how you got all of that from this thread.  Where was anyone attacking women?

I don't think anyone in this thread believes it is impossible for women to have hobbies, play games, and be geeks.  But like I was saying earlier certain things don't usually go hand in hand.  Is there anything wrong with someone who uploads youtube make up tips in their spare time and also uses a specific keyboard?  No.  But to me that's not two things that go together usually.  If she was youtube famous for uploading gaming videos this thread would probably not be worth reading to me.

I think there is a stereotype of what makes up the kind of people of this forum.  They are mostly male with interests in things like computers, technology, and games.

Those are stereotypically male hobbies.  That doesn't mean girls aren't welcome or allowed to be into those but I don't believe we're at that point in society where these are accepted as common yet.

Women make up half the population but I'm not sure if they make up half of this forum.  If someone posts a video up of a girl you will always get people commenting on her looks and occasionally someone is going to say something stupid or offensive.

Well said, paradox.  Leslieann, all your points are well taken but I don't think they apply to this thread.   I happen to know that we have more women on the forum than one might expect.  I wish more of them were vocal and public like you and MissMurder, but I understand why they choose to fly under the radar.

Paradox basically explained everything I wanted to said.  I started this thread because I thought it's interesting, also I did state that Freddie Wong also uses mechanical keyboard (who happen to be another youtube celebrity and is a guy).  So I don't know why everyone suddenly got offended and stuff.

It almost feel like a scenario where one guy mentioned there's a gay parade on the weekend, then the second guys freaks out and be like "no I'm not gay what you talking about?".  It's like first the guy wasn't implying anything to begin with and two there's nothing wrong being gay it's a life choice which is perfectly fine.

Now back to this topic like I said I wasn't implying anything no need to be offended.  Like paradox said typically you don't think makeup and keyboard go hand to hand that's why I thought it's interesting.  If you brought up a topic where a professional boxer that likes to paint his toe nail I'd find it interesting.

So now everyone just chill out and remember this is a casual topic no need to get all worked up  :P

Paradox basically explained everything I wanted to said.  I started this thread because I thought it's interesting, also I did state that Freddie Wong also uses mechanical keyboard (who happen to be another youtube celebrity and is a guy).  So I don't know why everyone suddenly got offended and stuff.

Hyde, I didn't mean for it to devolve into this, and you did nothing wrong. Pointing out that she uses one is no different than pointing it out in any TV show. I suspect your reaction was similar to mine, "a minor celeb who's also a geek, awesome".

Where I got annoyed was the (typical) sexist comments that followed, such as "it must be her boyfriends" and the (typical) dismissal by others. Just because it's a typical comment, doesn't mean it's not sexist, that was all I was trying to point out. I realize it's a boys club here and that most may have been meant as a joke, but so long as no one says anything, it will appear to remain a boys club and keep women from participating. Case in point, see below.

Paradox,
Computers are not nearly as male oriented/dominated as you think, at one point well over 30% of I.T. classrooms were female and rising at an amazing rate, it was expected to reach 45% by 2010 (if I remember right), instead it's now less than 5%. This is at a time when there are more women in college than men, and sexism is where they placed the blame. So while you can hope all day long that they will come forward on their own, the truth is that women are actually in retreat, and dismissing stereotypical sexist comments as normal is precisely what led to it.

Yeah, that is beyond out of line. That's the kind of stuff I actually, you know, swing a Model M at people for. Oh, I'm sorry, "bro" - you don't like some "chick" who can code circles around you? TOO DAMN BAD. The only thing people like that deserve is a 1986 3151 to the balls until such point as they can no longer reproduce and further infect the population with their stupidity. People like that don't deserve to touch a computer, much less waste the oxygen that could instead be used by actual human beings.

If folks think I was offended by it or something, well, I'm sorry. That really is not the case.
I'm just annoyed as all hell by the increasingly pervasive 'fanboy culture' crap - where people go nutso over what some minor nobody on the Internet does or uses. It's no different than the Kardashians. And YouTube "celebrities" are the worst of the lot. People who thrive on a site where the majority of comments qualify either as a hate crime, medical evidence of mental retardation, or both. (Which is kind of why I mentioned Richard Simmons - trust me, he has sold a lot more videos than anybody on YT.) Wow, you fly around in Minecraft recording videos - that's a real talent, that. Dude, you should check out these awesome DVDs I made with Windows Movie Maker!

So yeah, it's interesting to see that some keyboards are starting to get some wider exposure. But I swear, it should be legal to beat the stupid out of the sexist twits and fanboys/fangirls.

Sexism is an organizational component of "society"

It is valid "perceptual" filter a great deal of the time....

There may be 1 girl that can "code circles" around a guy, but that is generally NOT true... And the reason behind "THAT" is not sexism, rather, it is due to the way most cultures "socialize women"...

Women are assigned different emotional responses and abilities to develope, and ALMOST all the time, that would make them bad programmers and bad drivers, etc...

Just like how MEN make very poor care givers, ALMOST all the time....

No, it is not sexism...

We socialize women differently for a "PURPOSE", and it is not one that was arbitrary chosen....

Mothering is a MAJOR component of a female's lifespan.  This require that we give them a very specific skill set that is ill-suited for most other work.

yes it is, you are wrong, do not pass go, do not collect $200 more dollars than your female counterpart. institutional/systemic oppression is oppression.

Actually, yes, it is.
Based on what you are saying, women are ill suited for anything but being in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant. How exactly is that NOT sexist?

Childbirth is a major component, but it doesn't encompass your entire lifespan and if it is that important, why are we not teaching many of these same skills to men, they often raise children as well.

Paradox,
Computers are not nearly as male oriented/dominated as you think, at one point well over 30% of I.T. classrooms were female and rising at an amazing rate, it was expected to reach 45% by 2010 (if I remember right), instead it's now less than 5%. So while you can hope all day long that they will come forward on their own, the truth is that women are actually in retreat, and dismissing stereotypical sexist comments as normal is precisely what led to it.

Not sure I understand what you mean by computers "not nearly" being male dominated as I think.  You pointed out some figures stating female attendance close to 50 percent and then said it was retreating below 5 which would just prove my point.  And I feel that's unfortunate I wish there were more female students interested in IT.  I'm not saying because it's dominated by males means we have the right to be sexist.

I got my degree between 2005-2009 and as I reached the upper level courses and saw the same faces around most of my classes would have 30 people and consistently around 2-5 of them would be the same girls that ended up graduating with us.

I'm not saying "oh well, that's the way the world is no one should get angry or do anything about it."  I was simply saying the comment about it probably not being her keyboard was most likely not meant to offend and was probably caused by the unlikely pairing of makeup expert + keyboards.  I just felt the comment was kind of harmless although I can see why one might be offended.

I definitely don't want to be the guy who says what people can or cannot say on a discussion forum.  I just thought the blow back from a couple of comments should be viewed with a little more perspective.  I apologize, however, if I'm sounding offensive and out of line myself and I'll leave it as it is.  This all does feel like it's devolved much more than it should have.
