Yes, you should be able to reuse your parts. And yes, you should use the Poker layout because that's what the Poker PCB supports. The universal is better for the GH60 which has multiple layout options.

Thanks, I really appreciate the help.

What do most people use for a spacebar (since cherry spacebars have offset center stems) when using white on black cherry double shots?

I didn't know that Cherry spacebars were off-center. Is there an image that shows the difference? Are there common fixes on e.g. modern custom PCB's?

Here's a pretty obvious off-center space bar on a Cherry G80-3000 board:

Cherry off center spacing is weird. My 11900 has an off center 6x spacebar, and even when I found a 6x bar from a different board that had center and off center placings, it still didn't match up :-\

You can try stem modding it. I've also used the sticky tack used to hang posters to adjust spacebars. But that would mean that the stem that goes with the switch needs to be centered right.

Are 7x Cherry spacebars similarly off-center?

I think so. Check this out (from the DT Wiki)

Quote
6.25 units space bar with mounts for Cherry and Filco. Below are the Cherry G80-3000 stabilisers.

So the Filco is centered and Cherry is off-centered it seems.

Keyboardco

Ah interesting thank you !

2 questions

1) I'm still new at the fancy keyboards thing: No particular reason I couldn't use my WASD keyboard keycaps on this one right ?
2) Ive seen different amazing Filco on their JP website, can you get them in ISO 88 ? or is the one you linked all there is to get (easily) in Europe ?

- Edit
oh and 3) how do you think it scales quality wise vs WASD v2 keyboards ?

1) Yes you can use WASD keycaps on your Filco as long as it's ISO.

2) I think keyboardco.com is the best place to get the ISO 88 layout. I think the Filco/Diatec site mainly sells JP layout.

3) Filco is my favorite stock keyboard. I prefer Filcos above all other stock keyboards. I've heard WASD v2's are nice though.

Is there any English documentation for the ps2avrU firmware? (Sprit's PCBs ship with this firmware.)

Okay! I've had some success with hardware key remapping of Sprit's FaceW 60% PCB. I haven't managed to reflash the firmware though, which means that certain clever stuff like arbitrary function layers and dual-action keys aren't possible (I don't think), but this is a huge step up from not being able to to type a backtick yesterday.

The following technique is taken from this page. It uses a plain-text buffer as a primitive command prompt.

Steps to remap keys at the hardware level on a FaceW PCB:

Step 0. Unplug the USB cable from keyboard you're remapping to your computer.

Step 1. Open Notepad (Windows) or TextEdit (OS X, click "New Document").

Step 2. On the keyboard you're remapping, hold down M and plug the USB cable back in. The following should be printed in your text buffer:

Code: [Select]
ps2avrU

select mode
1:Key Mapping
2:Macro
3:Exit
4:boot mapper
Input Command Number:

Step 3. We're only going to be dealing with Key Mapping (the only thing I've figured out), so enter the code for Key Mapping. (In my case, this was 1, but the site occasionally shows different numbers, so YMMV.) Something like the following will be displayed:

Code: [Select]
Key Mapper
1: Change Layer
2: Select Key - input keycode
3: Save and Exit
4: Exit without Saving
6: Back
9: Reset to Default (Current Layer)
>>

A quick run down of the important options: 1 will change the function layer you're mapping (the default is the normal layer) and 2 will allow you to remap a key in your current layer. The rest are self-explanatory.

Step 4. Let's remap a key (CapsLock to L-Ctrl). Enter 2 and you'll be prompted to press the key you want to remap. Press CapsLock. You'll then be prompted to enter the 3-digit key code you want to remap it to. Using this spreadsheet, identify the correct 3-digit code. In our case, L-Ctrl is 103.

Step 5. You're now back in the menu from Step 3. Enter 3 to Save and Exit.

Step 6. Unplug your keyboard, plug it back it, and verify that the remapping was successful.

If you learn more about this process, please let me know and I'll add it to this post. Thanks!

How much would one pay for a leopold FC660M with MX clears? I'm looking at it on qtan and it's about $140 shipped, but that seems like an awful lot just for a minimal keyboard like that with Cherry switches. It has PBT keycaps at least, but the FC660C with topres is only slightly more than that (not that I need another topre board).

Also, does anyone know if those doubleshot PBT vortex keycaps that geek feng is selling on ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vortex-Green-Double-Shot-Thick-PBT-104-Keyset-Cherry-MX-Keycaps-/231099852343?&_trksid=p2056016.l4276) are worth it, or if they could fit in a filco MJ2?

Nope.

A lot of people think Filcos are the best. A lot of people think there are other readily available MX keyboards that are better, like Duckies. A lot of people think older MX keyboards like the Cherry G80 series are better than any readily available keyboards. It really comes down to personal preference.

Oh okay, I'll use that thread next time.

On qtan the price is $120, but shipping included it ends up being $140. I'd rather not buy used either, so it seems like this is my only option because I haven't found any listings for this particular board with clears.

Please don't double post.

And it should be Lasered POM. The L after 7000 means it's lasered. Then Dorkvader talked about this a couple of pages back; if it's a black keyboard, it's probably lasered POM. If white, it's probably lasered PBT.

There are 25 pins available, two for LED, leaves 23, 11*12 = 132 max.

Def not.  There is a lot of people here that use ISO layout among others.  However I believe this forum has a large amount of US users hence the bias toward ISO.  From my experience though www.deskthority.net seems to have a larger portion of users in Europe so I would believe there would be more supporters of ISO there.  However, I could also be very wrong here as well.

Most of the GBs for keycaps on the forum in general have an ISO option.

What's the easiest (no desoldering/soldering) or economic way (off the shelf) to obtain a lubed ergo-clear 87 TKL?

I've a WTB thread up but looking for any options that I might have missed.

I wouldn't mind the hassle if I can get a fully customized phantom, but it seems like I can get everything sourced except the WFD/Beast 1.25 plate. They are not being produced anymore and chance of getting one from classified isn't high.

Is there a solid quality (QFR quality is good enough for me) PCB mounted TKL?

From my research POKER I / POKER X is pcb mounted, but if I gone through all the trouble and ended up liking it (lubed ergo-clear) I'll be even more pressed to find a TKL. (Of course, if I don’t like it, I can just resell it like my other boards).

I have tried BS/black alps/peerless, mx green/blue/clear/brown/red/black, 45g/55g and have a variable type-s in the mail.

I think this will be the last switch type that I want to try (I like light, bouncy tactile switch and I'm not going to miss the other rare heavier switch like mx-white or grey)
QFR brown x2, Realforce 45G, Type-S, Keycool 22 blue

Previous keyboards: 55G, IBM Model M, Dell AT101W, Fujitsu FKB4725, G80-3000 clear, QFS green, QFS blue

You won't get off the shelf ergo clear soon. I am not aware of any PCB mounted TKL on the market right now, but you can get a phantom and just PCB mount the switches and have a case cut

G80-1800 comes close. And Phantom PCB doesn't have holes for PCB-mounting the switches.

What's the easiest (no desoldering/soldering) or economic way (off the shelf) to obtain a lubed ergo-clear 87 TKL?

I believe someone was having some plates made not sure what happened with that, I'm hoping mechanicalkeyboards.com will have some plates for phantoms eventually.

Hm, did you know that some people will do mods for free? You could buy a standard TKL that you do like, for example a Filco or Ducky, and the needed switches/springs. Then send it to one of the modders. Kmiller8 does it for free. There might be some others as well.

I'm not sure about a quality PCB-mounted TKL. Check out Ivan's post for more info.

I think kmiller decided he was charging now, the free thing was a trial run.

I didn't know that. I just found the post in his classifieds ad.

As far as buying ergo-clears your best bet is buy some off the classifieds if you can find them.  The only other option is to buy stock clears and mod them yourself.  Cherry has stated they would do a run of ergo-clears but the MOQ was 10,000 switches if I remember correctly.  This was at least 6 months ago the last time I remember someone communicating with Cherry directly on something like this.

Wasn't the MOQ 750,000? Or am I mistaken?

DT wiki says 750,000 for MOQ but perhaps that was due to stem color as well http://deskthority.net/wiki/Cherry_MX_Ergo_Clear

Ergo clears are nothing but hype. This is coming from someone who has tried them, and hated them. Everyone wants ergo clears because they are so glorified as the ultimate switch, probably because they AREN'T a "stock" switch, and take some effort to modify/acquire.

And again another personal preference being marketed as the gospel.  There really is not best or worst switch with the possible exception to cheap rubber domes.  Try the stock clears, if you find them two stiff or would like to feel a bit more of the tactile bump then go ahead and mod them.

Thanks for all the replies, BTW CPTBadAss I got your PM thanks for the heads up.

jdcarpe is definitely right about the allure of non-standard switches (human nature wanting something you can't have, not easily obtainable :)

However what makes me want to try ergo-clear so bad is this video

It looks so smooth and it thocks like a topre but it also debounces fast like cherry!

I've tried stock clears but they're not 100% of what I'm looking for.

Maybe lubed mx-brown will be as good but there is really no easy way to find out.

So yes now that I know of another option I'll definitely pm those folks to see who can help me mod one.

Too bad WFD is swarmed with real-life [tm], his craftsmanship seems top notch from the videos I watched.
