Ducky Shine II Questions
« on: Fri, 22 February 2013, 09:34:38 »
I want a board with MX Clears, so I'm thinking of getting the Ducky Shine II with Clears from PCHome. However, I would be replacing the keycaps with non-backlit PBT keycaps from Mechanicalkeyboards.com because (a) I want PBT and (b) I don't want the Chinese key legends.
My question, for Ducky Shine II owners: can the backlighting be turned off entirely? If so, does Caps Lock (and Num/Scroll lock) still light up when activated, as with a normal (non-backlit) keyboard?

On a side note, would it be worth just forgetting the Shine entirely and waiting for Ducky's new dyesub PBT boards to come out? How long do you think it will take before those are released to distributors?

NEVER WAIT for a keyboard to COME OUT...

That is the biggest waste of time ever....

Say you get a board TODAY for $100

3 months pass

A new board you want comes out @ $150

You sell your current board for $70 shipped, so, ~$40 less value total. due to shipping

You buy the new board for $150..

In total you've paid $150 for the new board + $40 for the 3 months that you used your old board..

@ $190 for having something TODAY.... is much more worth it than the wait time....

That's a very good point, but it doesn't really answer my question about the backlighting  :)

Well with backlit, ducky is the only game in town that's deemed "reliable"

So, there's nothing to "look into" because you don't have much of a choice..

If you want backlit, you have to get ducky

DO NOT buy a VORTEX.... so many people here got burned by little quality issues here/there

So I've heard, but I had a specific question about the backlighting for people who own this board, since I would essentially be using it as a non-backlit board.

I think non-transparent keys look nice on a backlit keyboard. Just look at all those KMACs with LEDs.

It doesn't have to be a KMAC to be backlit with non-transparent keys...or would that be breaking some kind of elitist rule?

tp4tissue, did you read my original post?
The reason why I would be using a backlit board as a non-backlit board is because it's the only (reasonable) option right now with MX Clear switches. I was asking if the backlight could be turned off completely, except for the Caps/Num/Scroll lock keys.

Yes the backlight can be completely turned off (and Shine IIs will store the LED state between reboots). I am not sure if Caps/Scroll/Num locks are affected the same.

MX Clears Shine IIs should be arriving at MechanicalKeyboards.com "soon", so even if you ordered from Asia now your keyboard might come in the same time they become available stateside.

There really isn't a reason to own a Shine II without wanting to use the backlight.

I sent MechanicalKeyboards.com an email and they answered my question, the Lock keys DO light up when the backlighting is turned off.
Posting it here in case anybody else was wondering.

I'm still not sure if I want to buy it from PCHome or just wait until MK gets it in stock, but this definitely helps me out.

Yeah, but I'd also have to deal with the Chinese legends until Ducky's dyesub PBT keycap sets come out. Not a big deal, but slightly annoying to me. I wish I had a better idea of when MK will get the US version in stock, other than just "soon".

MechanicalKeyboards tells us the lack of stock is from Ducky's end, that they buy out their stock with every order. We won't ever be sure if that's 100% true but that's how it's spun.

I sure hope the new White and Pink backlit keysets and the new dyesubbed thick PBT keysets/boards make their way over here and in significant quantities.

Blue gives a bright and crispy click. It's the loudest of Cherry MX. If you play video games it will noticeably click unless you wear headphones.

I just got a 9087 Red LED with MX Blues and a Universal plate that will let me open the switches so as to be able to swap between them.

~17 cents each (+5% service fee) and shipping will be ~$5 for the first 100g and ~$2.50 for each additional 100g using registered HK air mail small packet (takes ~7 days).
I don't even care if they wind up being crappy or used as I'm only really interested in the stems, but I hope they're not fake and cheap lol. FWIW, I only bought 100 and it looks like there are ~80K available.
