If you'd like to make an SMF theme, feel free to take a stab at it.  You can download the source from simplemachines.org.  I've made lots of custom changes to the template, but as long as you avoid those areas you should be fine.

I like the old theme a bit more, the colors are much more calm and distinct from each other. I think it is like my favorite message board theme even beyond just this site.

mmkay, does it run off CSS?  Also, if people like it could it then be integrated into the forum itself?

Mostly this. It is cleaner and more modern-looking, but it does tend to blur together.

It may take me a while to decide how much I like it.

The subtle contrast differences at these saturated luminescence levels will vary, depending on the monitor.  Tired flat panels are especially prone to this due to their worn back lights.  On the old Dell I am using now, it is not great.  If I drag it over to my IPS, it looks wonderful.  I can bump the contrast a bit

CSS plays a part.  There are graphics components as well.  The default SMF theme is a beast and makes heavy use of slicing PNGs.  I suggest you look it over.  If it is well liked, I'd consider installing it.

Its a little too bright for me, I set it back to the old style. I have a 27" screen and it seemed to bright, but I think it very nice on laptops.
